I had a leak from my trans. So i pulled it and found oil leak coming from the input shaft. Is this seal on backwards?? This is the retainer plate on the input side of the trans

 

The spring side of the seal should face oil and the letters should face air. It's been a while since I've been in mine so I can't tell from the pictures and description which side we're viewing from.

 

based off your description it would be backwards then. The side pictured would be facing the trans. So the spring side is facing the engine

 

Here is another pic. As it sits here on the input shaft the spring is facing out towards you. The first pic shows the back side of this plate.

Also, looks like the nose that the throwout bearing rides on is out of round. You didn't beat on that to un-stick the seal retainer plate, did you?

 

Yes i did! fak! I got lazy and couldn't find my dead blow. I'm thinking it will be ok, ima try and straighten it out a little

 

Used my quarantine time off to replace the clutch. I hope you guys on this thread are right about the seal being backwards. I bought this truck used not knowing the maintenance history. The transmission input seal looks to be leaking and the seal was on just like the OP’s.

Seal is backwards?

W56B transmission with 89 and later throw-out bearing. Didn’t feel right, and measured much taller than the 88 OEM

All cleaned up with new fork, throw out bearing, seal, collar and clips from 22REPerformance.
