I'm deciding on whether to buy four or five new bigger tires to go with my Revtek lift. Any problems with a 285/75-16 in terms of the spare?

If your 4Runner has the tow package, a 33" (285/75/16) tire, I believe, won't fit in the stock location under the truck unless it's deflated. I'm sure other Board members will correct me if I'm wrong. That's one of the reasons why I'm getting a custom bumper with an intergrated hitch receiver and getting rid of the old bumper and tow package.

 

it will fit if its deflated. ive needed it once, i just filled it up before i put it on. one the benefits of having the arb compressor. thats the only time i use the arb to fill tires.

How about a rear tire carrier? That way you can add another fuel tank in the place where you used to hang the spare.

 

I bought four brand new tires to put on the rig. Then I bought one used BFGoodrich MT (60% tread left) for $30. Then sell the spare tire on Ebay as brand new (never used mine) for $70. Also if you still have a decent amount of tread left on the used tires throw those on ebay as well, you might get another $50-70 for all four tires. I got about $200 for my old tires, but they still had 90% tread left on them.

 

Great suggestion for the ebay thing. Makes a lot of sense. So . . clearly the 285 with a factory hitch won't fit?? Right?

 

It will fit, deflated, but then you need to have the means of inflating it before using it. Also check the for sale section here on YotaTech, you can find some good deals. I got my used 285 spare from Data.

 

I bought 5 rims and 5 285/75/16 MT/Rs and I rotate all (5) every oil change, every 3K miles. Last set I got over 68K miles out of...I just put my spare in the cargo area for now, strapped down well of course, until I custom build a rear bumper and then I'll make some room for the spare perhaps. I don't use the cargo area for much, so covered up with the cargo cover you never know it's there. I recommend a matching rim/spare tire and rotating all (5) tires that way you know your spare is in good shape if/WHEN you need it.

Here is a 285 under my truck. Obviously, I did remove the factory hitch. I have no issues with mine. I should add that it also fit with the stock bumper as well.

You take care of your tires, they take care of you and it takes little effort to rotate them every 3K, just a bit of dedication.
