Im a newbie in here. i was always into wheeling but i never was the one driving. now i have a 86 4runner that i want to make into a woods truck. i want to put a suspension lift in it but there are so many companies. what would you recommend for a lift

 

I'm in the same boat as you, but I think i've decided on the Superlift kit with new rear leaf's.


I've been wheeling with friends and I finally bought my own truck about two months ago. It's an 88 4Runner.

 

Not only do i have to start to learn how to wheel myself i have to learn how to drive a standard. the tranny in my truck went so im replacing it with a tranny from a 84 pickup, and thats a standard. my 86 is a automatic. im not worried about learning how.
for my suspension lift ive been told to look at superlift or sky jacker

Spent the extra money when you put the standard trans in and by a good
clutch. It makes all the diffrence in the world, it sucks when you smoke a clutch on a trail. I like run a Centerforce 2 duel friction in mine. It has held up very well. One thing to keep in mind with the lift to keep in mind with lift kits.
Try to stay a way from springs with a lot of arch to them. Flater is better. High arch sping's tend to ride rough and limit travel. I broke my main leaf on my old Super lift springs they were about a 6" spring. I got it fixed but also shopped around for new sping's . I ended up going to allpro for my rear sping's they work very well. But I would have to say i f I was just starting out again I would do the Rancho kit. It is easy to install, gets the job done and the spring's front and rear are well matched. The only down fall is that it is only a 3" lift. The only recomend 32" tires with out trimming. But that could be fixed with a body lift. Do your homework and all will be well.

 

Im not the one putting in the lift kit my bf is. He is putting a purple clutch in the 4runner as well, says its better than the one i have. Im looking around and trying to read up on the different lifts. There are so many it gives me a headache. lol. thanx for the advice

 

I also had superlift springs on mine at first....broke them within a year....went with BDS....lifetime warantee....havent had to make a claim yet but have had a friends that did....never a problem for them

 

All I found on BDS's website was a rear block kit for 1st Gen 4Runners. What lift would you guys recommend? A mix and match of parts? One single company better than the rest? So far it looks like TrailMaster, SuperLift, SkyJacker, and Rancho make lifts. Am I missing any?

For those of you who switched to BDS rear leaf springs, did you still use the SuperLift (or other company's) IFS lift parts?
