I bought a LUK 16-057 clutch kit. I'm trying to fit the pressure plate that came with it to the old flywheel on my '88 22re 5spd 4wd truck.

In the position where the pressure plate's holes line up with flywheel's holes, the pressure plate barely won't fit over the dowel pins on the flywheel. If I turn the pressure plate slightly, the dowel pins will fit in the slightly larger hole right next to it where the bolt goes, but then the holes don't line up. It's as if they expected the dowel pin and the bolt right next to it to be swapped.

Are the dowels screwed into threads so that the positions can be swapped, or are they just punched into a smooth bore?

I've already installed the pilot bearing and release bearing, so I doubt that I can take the pressure plate back since it was part of the kit.

I got the one for the 22RTE engine the pins on the fly wheels are different.

Just what Fly Wheel do you have ??

Yours is wrong but you need to figure out just why.

 

Do you know the part number for the flywheel. I recently ordered, LuK LFW148 Flywheel, from amazon for my 87 runner; should be delivered this week. I can test it out to make sure it fits when it comes in. You may have received the turbo flywheel as I was warned that these flywheels get mixed up frequently. Now I'm sweating it. Good luck.

Assuming that this pressure plate was for the turbo, could it be used if the holes for the dowels were reamed out slightly to fit over them? Everything else about it seems to look like a fit. Is it just a heavier-duty pressure plate?

 

This is the old flywheel that I'm reusing (after having it resurfaced). You can see the markings on the back of it.

They used to have a great parts catalog gave dimensions on everything as well as applications. I looked for about 10 minutes

The pins line up the clutch plate will just not fit over the pins??

Burrs on the pins or the clutch plate holes ??

Are the holes in the clutch plate really to small ?

Which might leave me to think maybe you have a Clutch Kit Boxed wrong.

If the holes are to small there is going to be a lot more then just yours drilled wrong..

 

For some reason I thought you got the flywheel with it too. Might be a wrong boxing like others have said. Maybe one for a celica or something if things line up but don't fit.

 

All the dowel and bolt holes line up perfectly.

One dowel has some chew marks on it like somebody dug into it with some vice grips, but the rest are smooth. I even went around them all a few times with some fine grit paper and shined them up. I even put a dab of lube on them to try and help the plate slide over them.

The dowel holes are obviously just a hair too small, but you can't actually tell just by looking at them. I tried tapping the pressure plate onto the dowels with a mallet, but it wasn't budging, and I don't want to damage to plate. It doesn't want to get started on any of the three dowels.

I'm guessing that a light reaming of the dowel holes is all that is needed since everything else looks like a perfect fit, I just wanted to get some feedback first. I was sort of expecting that maybe somebody had run into something like this before, especially since LUK seems to be a popular brand.

 

Someone used the wrong drill bit .

Who can say maybe the help had them in the wrong place .

just fix as needed but I can`t believe yours was the only one . Not like they build one at a time

All they do is help hold the plate on till the bolts are in

Unless your flywheel has other then the stock dowel pins .

I have seen strange things this is just one more

 

Here's the new and old pressure plates.

The only marking that I could find on the new plate were on the inside of the fingers. One finger is marked "412107400", and another finger is marked "E3".

I took my cheap calipers to the inside diameter of the dowel holes, and I can't actually tell a difference between the new and old plates. It must only be like a thousandth off. I'm surprised I wasn't able to tap it on with my mallet.

Oh well, it's a simple fix. I just wanted to ask around before I took the drill to it.

 

i think that it remains centered on the flywheel because the edges are in a recessed area?

 

Visually you can see there are two sizes of holes on the new one where the old one all the holes look to be identical in size. I would just drill it with a bit that fits well in the larger hole.

 

A 5/16" bit fit the dowel hole in the new plate tightly, so I used an 11/32" bit to open it up a hair. After that, it fit over the dowels easily and everything bolted up properly.

Like I said I can`t see just yours being the only one with this issue.

 

I didn't buy it from a franchise. It was from a local guy with a small shop that's barely big enough for more than one customer at a time. He usually gets better-than-dealer prices on factory parts, so I've been going to him for a few years now for import parts. I haven't had any problems before.
