Hey guys, I just dropped my baby off with the really nice guys at Toy Only Swaps where they will swapping out my very tired, leaky, and old 3.0 with a 3.4 from an '04 Tacoma. I was thinking about this today and was wondering what the power band is for the 3.4 and where you generally want your RPM's to be with that motor.

My rig is garage kept pavement princess (I beat my Jeep on the trail, but this is a bit of a family heirloom now) 1990 SR5 4Runner with the automatic transmission and 4 wheel drive. I am unsure what the gear ratio is in the rear, but I think it was stock with 4.10's? The tires are stock sized (I can't remember offhand),but not 31x10.5, they're smaller. I tried doing some searching on it, but you guys have so much information available on this site that I kinda got mired down by all the different variables.

Will the new 3.4 be alright with the standard tires and gear ratios? Or should I be looking at slightly larger tires or even a re-gear to get her just right in the power band? Thanks a bunch for any information you've got to share!

 

I have a 3.4 with stock 4 cyl 4:10 gears and 31" tires. I'm gonna try 33's to see how it works.
The 3.4 is an outstanding engine with torque nearly matching hp, it pulls down low or midrange and will pull hard in the upper rpms.
I got 19 mpg highway pulling about 1k pounds of trailer and gear. My 88 pu is a joy to drive with power and has surprised more than a few.

I am so glad to hear that. I am a bit anxious about the swap honestly. There wasn't anything mechanically wrong with the old 3.0 other than it was fairly tired and I was always chasing leaks here and there. I would've felt better, or probably have done it sooner if it had at least been burning oil or something. That 3.0 has been very good to me all these years and miles.
