2LT Diesel help

Hi everybody,
I just picked up an 87 xcab truck from a friend. It was imported from Canada with the 2LT 5spd 4x4 drivetrain.
I need some advice on an engine overspeed issue.
We were driving on the hiway at normal speeds, when the engine decided to run-on/overspeed, on us.
Had to jam the brakes in 5th to kill the engine. (Key off/ solenoid off didn't work.
Tried to restart a couple of times, and it did the same thing.
I have some experience with diesels, but could use some advice to pin down the cause.
My guesses...
1. Bad turbo seals ? (oil feeding the engine to keep it running)
2. Injector pump issues ?

Compression check shows great #'s
( these were taken by the p.o.), so I don't think it's sucking lube oil past the rings, or down the valve stems.

I'm thinking about starting it up with the turbo disconnected. That should determine if a leaky seal was the culprit.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I also want to add that this happened about 10 years ago. The truck had been sitting at my friends house until he recently decided to sell it to me.

did someone monkey with the injection pump? sounds like its running away. if you dont get much help here try 4btswaps.com pretty knowlegable diesel guys over there. does the pump have a manual kill lever? if it does and works i would figure out how to control that in the cab. runaway can be scary. my 2jzgte throttle cable was frayed and got stuck wide open for a few but i turned off the key.

Was it blowing a bunch of smoke? The color would tell you if it was the turbo or the injection pump.

I'm sure the pump wasn't messed with, as I was riding shotgun in the rig when she ran away.
We were coming back from a razor clam dig at the beach, and had just put on 180 mules ,to and from that day.
The previous owner was driving, and he's smart enough not to mess with the pump. ( at least he would have told me if he had....
It was 10 years ago, so I can't recall what color, if any, smoke there was.
I'm going to pull the glow plugs, and squirt a little marvel mystery oil in the cylinders, then bar it over by hand to make sure it's not stuck, then go from there.

That ToyotaSurf thread was interesting, Blake.
It sounds like most of the ideas I was tossing around.
Thanks for the help.
I'm going to join those 2 Boards.

This is a good sign. I'm fairly positive that the Turbo oil seals have failed, and
Are the cause of the runaway.
Thats a lot of oily gunk from the turbo air discharge line.
