help ! I just cant figure this thing out ..

first off , it's an /86 22RE 4X4 .
runs and drives great .. DD

this summer it started to develop a "no start" problem . no computer codes

problem :

morning start - fires right up .. runs and drives all day or a short drive . lunch , fires right up , again , will run all day .
what happens is if I shut it off , and run into the store for a moment , come back out in 5 mins , it wont start ... just cranks . but if I squirt a shot of "cold start" into the throttle body , it'll fire right up , and again run and drive all day . if I leave it sit for ~ 10-15 mins , it's starts on it's own as well .

so I have checked fuel spark and air , and replaced :
fuel filter , fuel pump , fuel tank , fuel pressure regulator , air flow meter , throttle body , coil , plugs , wires , cap , rotor , cold start injector and I'm sure there is more .. just cant think of it at the moment ...
about the only thing I haven't changed , is the distributor , and the computer .

I was going to do a seafoam clean the intake , thinking the carbon crusted ? intake might be soaking up the fuel when hot ... but I just don't know what could be causing this ?

Just a thought since it seems to be fuel related I wonder if the EFI or Circuit Opening Relay coils are getting tired.

Have you tried jumping the fuel pump test connector see if it cures the issue ??

That narrows it down for closer trouble shooting.

Maybe you have done this just forget when typing..

 

Next time it wont start, I would crack open the bolt to the Cold Start Injector. Reason being I would want to see if there is any pressure in the fuel rail. You should replace the crush washers when loosening it but I dont always. Just make sure it is not leaking when you do get it started up.

It should hold pressure for quite some time even after being shut off of a lengthy amount of time. It should spray a few ounces for a second or two when you crack the bolt loose.

I kind of thinking like wyoming is. A weak COR relay not energizing fast enough or not at all until you give it a shot of starting fluid.

A weak Fuel Pressure Regulator not holding pressure therefore not letting the injectors to get fuel in the cylinders.

The Fuel Pump not able to over power the back pressure in the fuel system.

I am thinking that maybe when you give it a shot of starting fluid it is either over coming the fuel pressure for the fuel pump, some how getting the electric flowing to get the COR operating, or maybe the Fuel Pressure Regulator is maybe not holding the pressure until the fuel starts flowing.

I see you changed those parts but still wonder if it is a electric part getting hot and working after it cools down.

I had similar problem and I found it to be caused by cold start injector connector not seated right. You might as well inspect/clean all connections related to the CSI.

This connector was not seated well on mine.
