Im about to get a 88 pickup. My question is how can i tell if the bed a motor have been replaced? He says its an 88 but the bed looks like the beds off the 82 with the two latches. And the motor is 22r carb. But the front end looks like the late 80s style, its ifs. I asked him about the bed and he said it was imported(the truck) from another country that it wasnt an original american version il try and post pics of it

You have the right bed. There are two styles of beds. I believe you have the one that was made in Japan. The other style you see I believe was made in the states. I also think you have a 2 wheel drive grill in your truck.

 

Ok thanks for the reply i noticed after i posted that the grill was different. What about the motor i kept seeing that they switch to the 22re in 88 and it has the 22r in it or could this just be due to it being due the same reason the bed is different than most others

 

I had a 91 2wd with a factory 22r. They didn't just stop making carbureted engines in 85, when efi came out. So it's not always in 85+ models. Nice truck, hope you enjoy it!

 

Ok thanks i was looking up the specs of the 22r and didnt see any 22r past 87 thats what had me ask thanks for the help

 

I think it 92 that was the last year of the carbed motors.

 

Terry is right. In 1988 the 22R was standard in the pickup. You could get only the 22RE in the 4Runner.


That looks like a nice truck. The grill is easy enough to change if you prefer a different one. I really like the bed you have better than the typical one.

 

You could only get the 22RE in the 4Runner? I think you mean it was standard in the 4Runner and not in the pickup in 1988, otherwise you are misinformed, I have a factory 22RE 1988 pickup truck.

 

Looking at the fender wells on this truck makes me think it's a 2wd body on a 4wd frame. The flares don't seem to bulge out like on a 4wd. I could be wrong. But it just looks like a conversion to me

 

I beleave the fenders were trimed due to the truck had 33s on it at one time but i dont know if its 2wd or 4wd fenders. As long as it runs and drives good it dont bother me

Bootscootboogie After looking at a bunch of 88 picks 2wd and 4wd i would say it has a 2wd body swaped to a 4wd frame

 

If you want to see if the body and frame VINs match, check behind the passenger front tire. The VIN is stamped in the frame and should match the dash. It is possible to swap VINs out of the dash but most would not go thru the trouble of that. Also there is alot of frame swapping that goes on due to so many frames rusting out.

By the looks of it it is a 2wd body the grill the fenders and lack of a real bumber on the rear and im sure there is other small details i have not noticed since i dont have the truck yet

 

As stated above, check the frame VIN behind the passenger front tire and match it to the body. There are a lot of locations where the VIN is posted on the body. The one on the dash is possible to swap by swapping the dash, but there are also labels under the hood at the top center of the firewall, in the driver's door jamb, and stickers on each body panel and door. The stickers are usually pretty faded at this point and if the truck was ever in an accident and had a fender replaced it would be missing.

My vote is 2WD body on 4WD frame. 4Runners had EFI from 85 onward. It was an option on Pickups 85 onward.

 

I would say it is the 2WD body cause not many 88 yota's came with the Japanese bed that where 4WD to my knowledge anyway.

 

Ok i checked the vins and they dont match how can i decode the frame vin RN61-0225387

 

Just saw this. The 22RE was an option for the pickup. The 22R was standard. The 22RE was the only 4cyl you could get in the 86-89 4Runner. No carbs. The 84 4Runner had a 22R and I'm not sure if you could get a carb in a 85 4Runner.
