rebuild of an 86 Toyota pickup

Hey guys, my name is Gary and this is the first time ever strting to build a truck in my life, lol. I just biought an 86 Toyota SR5 short bed 4x4. The bad is in shotty condition, the cab ain't really that bad at all, just sime ninor damage on the driver side front corner above the marker light and some rust on both lower rear cab corners. I live in KY so over here we have to deal with some rust now and then. The cab is in for a major overhaul from what I can tell so far. The seats need to be redone as well as the crapetand need to replace the dash on the passenger side or put a cap on it. The driveline seems to be in fair condition except the 2 front CV axles need to be replaced. The owner was gonna just slap a set of used ones in it from another trucknbut I went ahead and paid the money to replace them with the gold series that Autozone sells since they are supposed to be new and have a lifetime warranty on them so if they break I can just take them back and get new ones again, lol
But the very first thing I done was to order a Haynes manual and a rebuild DVD off of ebay for less than 25.00 which I thought was a VERY good deal. The very next thing was the CV axkles which took a few days to get to the store cause they was special order and I also bought 2 front corner maker lights since the was busted all to pieces.the truck came with steel wheels and aluminum ones also but to keep the price down on the truck I told him he could keep the aluminam ones to do with as he pleased, they wasn't in the best of shape either.the truck is coming with some off brand 32x11.5xR15's that I figured was to big since I couldn't take it anywhere to get programed for the bigger tires, also the was EXPENSIVE as all hell so I went with the next lower size but paying 800 is alot better than 1100 and thats a big thing seeing how I'm on a budget for the time being. The steel wheels I'm taking to get them prepped and powder coat the same color as the truckthe cab I'm taking to a family friend to get the inside cab done, he does an excellent job but he is slower than pine water tbh, lmao. Down the road a piece I'll get a steel flatbed made by his son, I have very few friends but the ones I do have I can really trust. Anyways I'm gonna try and get the pics I got of the truck before and will post more as the build comes along.
I've read alot of the build threads that have been posted and was really impressed with quite a few of them. to everyone building they're own truck, good luck and hope the best fro ya, till next time I'm out for a while to upload a bunch of pics of the truck to ya, later all

Well guys the site won't let me upload any pics cause they're to big it says, if anyone hase any ideas it would be greatly appreciated, night guys and gals

the steel wheels thats on it are the ones I'm gonna get powder coated black, from the looks of it they seem to be in good shape but will have to wait till I get to the tire shop to find out

when I replace the bed I'll be seking these tail lights with the plags also

I told you guys about the bed being all shotty, well it looks worse than it does in the pics I just uploaded, lol

some pics of the cab interior that needs an over haul, lol

these are the axles that he was gonna throw in the front end before I went and got brand new ones from AutoZone, I think its well worth it to do it right the first time

a

a couple pics of the motor thats in it and will have to make a few upgrades to before I do anything IMO

thanks Terry, it'll be a slow process as I'm on a fixed budget and a disabled vet to boot, lol I also placed this build up in the wrong year of the secton, lol, go figure. I'd move it to where it is supposed to be but not really sure on how to that

Dont look at the big picture, just look at each small fix one at a time. You will eventually get it to where you want it to be. These threads are great for seeing what you started with and where you end up at.

I did not catch that it was in the wrong section the first time but it was something you could not do anyways. It is a quick fix for me to do and now have it in the 86-95 section.

The frame looks great. The bed panels hold alot of debri in between the bed and panels and that is what causes the beds to rot out. Other then the bed, you have a solid truck to work with it looks like. Just takes a little time to get done. You will get there.

Looking forward to your progress (no matter how slow it may be). The 86 single cab was what forever imprinted the Yota 4x4 in my DNA. I would love to build one some day.

Hey guys, the gy I bought the truck from was gonna put in the CV axles I bought but I guess he's taking his own sweet time. I've been reading my Haynes manual for the past couple of days on the subject but nothing is coming around in my head. Has anyone got a clue to where I can see a video on replacing them, I really need to get this done so if anyone has any ideas on the subject it would be greatly appreciacted and thanks.

I tried looking for a youtube video and did not have any luck myself.

With the price of both boots you're getting close to the price of a rebuilt half-shaft, ready to go. Plus, replacing the boots is a dirty, messy job (you'll be messy anyway, cleaning up the old grease you've thrown all over the place). There are two kinds of clips that hold the boots on; if you already own one of the tools, your new boots will come with the other kind of clip!

But to replace a CV boot you must know the SECRET: support the wheel on a jackstand so that the suspension is fully retracted (just as it would be sitting on the ground). Once unbolted, the half-shaft can be wiggled out pretty easily. But if you leave the wheel hanging (by putting your jackstand under the frame, for instance), the angles are not right, and it WILL NOT come out. DO NOT pound out the studs, remove the ball joint, take off the shocks -- you don't need to do that if you know the secret.
I have seen a thread somewhere out there that has a better description just cant find it. The above quote is something I am going to try when I do my next shaft replacement.

One under utlized tool is the build threads. I copy and paste videos, links, and pictures on my builds. Have used them thousands of times to help remember how I did a certain repair. Also great to show what you started with and ended up with.

Hey guys and girls, its me again on my build. So far I've ordered the front marker lights, From partstrain.com, ordered a 3 ton Jack and stands from Harbor Freight, just got done with pordering the Cat and muffler from Advanced Auto online and saved about 20.00 from them, and ordered a S&D header from LCE and should have everything by next week except the muffler, which has to come from the factory from what I'm told. I still have to get the tires put on and once all the exhaust components get here take it to a shop and get it installed, lmao, yeah I would have a problem with getting the exhaust studs out, haha.once I start getting it all together I'll post some pics so ya can check them out but for now I gotta go. Later gang and have a great weekend cause I know I won't.

Hey Ladies and Gents, its me again with my build progress. I saw the truck again this afternoon and it looks to be turning out pretty good so far. The CV axles are in finally, lmao, and talked with the PO and he said he tried to start it and it did but it shut right back down, I won't give him anymore money cause he has done told me that it was a running and driving truck when I paid him. Th etruck is in my name, tagged and insured as of a couple weeks ago, I have the front corner lights, the door handles and bezels are hard to find in good shape. I ordered the header this afternoon and it should be here by friday at the latest. I got the Cat for it today and still waiting on the muffler for it, I guess Magnaflow has to build the damn thing, lmao. I sqaw the new tires today and tried to pay for them but Tire Discounters told me to hold off till I was ready to put them on,good idea I reckon, but they do look good and will look even better once they're on, lol. The header I buoght is from LCE and it only cost me 390 to the purchase and shipping to my front door which I thought was AWESOME, they are really trying to get me staightened out which I can appreciate and will recomend them any day to whoever asks me with in problem. Onec I get the whole exhaust together all I need to do is get it installed and I'll be legal. The reason I bought a Cat for it was because it was they're recomendation to do so, they told me that I would get better low end torque from it, not sure which way or the other so feel free to drop me a line or so if you can or will contridict them cause to be honest IDK so any and all help is welcome. I still need to find a few interior parts and a DS front fender for it, IDK anything about straightening it out or I would, lol. Anyway I hope it all works out for the best and hope to be driving it SOON. Wish me luck and feel free to drop any suggestions if you need or want to. I really glad I found this site cause so far I've found so much information about toyota's and hope I can learn from the expirience, Gary

Hey guys, its me again, I called Magnaflow this morning after I woke up and they told me they shipped it yesterday and should be here by Friday, WHOOAHHH, LMAO.and the PO told me it would be ready in a few days so it'll be right on time. Get the tires and exhaust done the same day and it'll finally be road worthy. The PO also cleaned up the inside also and it doesn't look near as dirty as the pics I posted so thats a good thing. If any of you guys have an opinion to whether have the cat on or off will help if any of you no whats the best setup will help alot. Thanks for the input and hope to have more pics up soon. Later for now.

P.S. I got the jackstands in today also so I'm ready fro any undercarriage work now, lol.

Hey peeps, looks like I got up to 18 hours before I receive the Header from LCE and the muffler from Magnaflow, and might even get the exhaust studs from LCE also and I can't wait TBH. While I was at Advanced Auto parts I asked the fella working the counter about how much they're studs cost and to my disbelief they was almost 7$ for only 2 studs so paying 18$ for the stud kit was well worth the money from LCE if ya ask me. I understand that you get a discount for buying for buying the whole set but payin 28$ for 8 studs just sounds crazy as hell unless you ABSOLUTELY needed them right then and there.

And about the updated pics, I saw the guy this past monday and tbh I'm not sure he's even got a chance to work on it any more. I'm trying not to push him but its starting to get to the point that if I don't get a call by Monday or Tuesday I'll be calling him back to see what the hold up is. He most likely missed a ground or 2 when combining the two trucks, and from what I understand there are about 5 or 6 ground locations in the engine bay alone and no telling how many others there are, lol

Mechanics are great for everyday repairs but when it comes to something out of the normal, they just cant really know the ins and outs of each model. I have taken my 88 to several of the local Toyota gurus that were to be experts and even to Toyota and what a shocker I got. Some of them experts were not near as good as talked about.

Some were honest enough to let me know the problem was over their head but a few of them really would of done a half butted job.

I've had that happen at a toyota dealer before, had my truck towed 30 miles away and they said I didn't use toyota parts and thats why it was acting like it did so I paid. Same problem happened a week later and they said it was a fuel pump and I said how much more do you wanna charge me just to pluck and chucks parts till you find the rea problem and they said it was fixed. I said "thats what you said before and the problem happened again so you can take the money from the tune up you did on it and use that to pay for the fuel pump cause I'll be damned if you'll get another red cent from me. Got my truck back and they said you owe us money so I asked to talk to the owner and they said no problem here, have a good day, lmao
