Violent Shaking When Starting off in 1st/Shifting into 2nd

Hey everyone. I'm new to this so I'll just get to the point. Someone gave me a 1983 Toyota Pickup with the 22r. It's the longbed, straight axle obviously. With the exception of a rough idle and the problem I'm about to convey, it runs fine. So here goes... When the truck is stopped and in 1st gear, I give it gas and let out the clutch and the whole front end of the truck shakes VERY violently. The problem repeats as I'm shifting from 1st to 2nd and that's it. Shifts into 3rd and 4th fine. I've spent a few hours researching this and reading similar forum posts but, can't really find anyone with this EXACT problem. Let me know if you have any suggestions! Thanks a bunch!!

Did this truck sit for a long time before it was given to you??

I have seen rust on flywheels and clutch plates cause this.

Good chance driving it will cure it then maybe not.

are you sure your starting out in first gear??

Then if this has huge tires and numerically low gears that could be a problem.

Some things to ponder on

I used to have a 94 pickup 22RE and it used to shake like that too while letting out the clutch. What it ended up being was there was a bracket missing that held the engine and tranny together so it allowed the other side bracket to loosen and break. It caused the engine and tranny to slightly wedge against each other causing the shaking. Check to make sure all the bolts are tight that hold them together and no brackets are broke or missing. no idea why that truck was missing a bracket before I bought it. Didn't think to check there haha

Thanks, guys. I checked the tranny mounts. Everythings intact and accounted for. I have noticed today, though, that it is considerably worse when the truck warmer.

Is it a side to side shake, or a front to back lurching type thing?

If its a lurching front to back type thing, it could be the clutch slave cylinder, take a peek on the passenger side where the engine meets the tranny and the little cylinder there may not be moving smoothly, causing the clutch to not engage properly (usually delayed) and cause lurching.

And I didn't mean tranny mounts. The actual bolts that hold the engine and trans together. Mine had a bracket on both sides that mounted from the engine to trans and that's what kept it from wedging. You might of looked at it I'm just going from what you posted that you checked tranny mounts.

CookieMoster - It's a side to side shake. I'll check it out, anyways.

Cannon - I understood what you meant. Those bolts look fine. Thanks!

Pull the inspection plate and look for a lot of black dust.
In the 80's Toy was selling off some crappy alternate clutch plates that used rubber torque suppressors instead of springs in the clutch plate.
They have been know to fall out and bounce around, I went through the same thing when I owned a 85 Celica.
