have a question about testing the valve. my buddy said to pull the air hose behind it and if the idle goes up its most likely a clogged port. i pulled the hose off and the truck wouldnt idle and if i tried to hold the throttle up it missed. put it back on and ran fine. pulled the hose in front and it idles super low. any way at this point what would be my next step? the problem im having is no fast idle on cold starts.

 

FSM usually helps but what the hell... here....

you can get the entire swap used for that much, or less, and it's much better.

helpful tip: i was able to use the '86 throttle cable, by cutting the very tip off slightly with a die grinder, and screwing on one of the dorman help barrel ends... i think that i had to drill the barrel out very slightly tho.

 

Yea I think they show available but are not. 22230-35010 is mine for 85 4runner and they are gone with the wind.

 

Same p/n as mine. Showed available but who knows until he orders it I guess haha. I'll be looking in to the newer manifold swap.

 

Just saw one listed on Ebay looks pretty clean but was used. Not sure what the new manifold swap cost or if it is worth it...

 

Got a question regarding my '85 truck with a 22re. It has recently started a really fast idle at cold start up. This lasts for about 20-30 minutes, and once I get up in the mountains it settles down to its normal 800RPM or thereabouts.

My truck appears to have a motor from a 1990 truck in it; judging from the code on the intake and the fuel injectors that were on it. I've had numerous issues getting it to run on the 1985 computer, and along the way have done the following:

- all new vacuum hoses; threw away the metal spaghetti from the 1990 and routed everything straight with new vacuum hoses
- replaced the master cylinder and booster, due to loss of idle under heavy braking
- replaced fuel injectors with '85 model
- replaced the rubber boot coming from the air cleaner to the intake


This truck does not seem to have an aux air unit for warm-up. My '87 had one, and I ended up rebuilding that one, but I don't see one on this engine. Was the '85 model EFI supposed to have one???

 

did you read the intake swap link that i posted? because it'll tell you what you have now.

 

The intake swap discussion that I saw was talking about trucks in the 86-90 range. For whatever reason, my 85 does not seem to have one on it that I can find. Perhaps I just need to look closer? On my last Toy, it was underneath the front of the air intake (the front of the air dam or whatever the correct term is for it.) I've had this thing taken down a fair piece, but have yet to see a cold idle air mix box on it?? That's sort of the confusing part.

Did the 85 use this type box, or did it use some other method for the fast idle at startup?

 

you said that your truck had a 1990 engine in it, so it should have the later model plenum swap already.

look at the post from pappy in that thread, he has pics of both plenum types.

 

I believe the 90 model did not have an auxiliary air valve. It should be "built in" to the throttle body
