my new 92, all about fuel mileage!

well ive been off of this forum for quite some time, since the time I was very active here ive went to diesel college , graduated and got an awesome job as a school bus diesel mechanic, im now looking at buying a house here in the next 6 months and life is good, I was on craigslist Wednesday night , guy was driving this truck from south Carolina to Arizona , truck blew a head gasket, didn't have the money to fix it, needed money for a plan ticket, I was the first person to call and told him I was going to call out of work tomorrow to go see it, now being there was no set price or no pictures I was almost weary doing some, but oh well, arriving at the auto shop it was located at I found this

342k miles on the 22re, with what looks to be like a brand new head! cold a/c, American racing wheel, and brand new tires, the deal was made over the phone, I headed to the motel he was at to retrieve my title for my 269$ Toyota truck! (200 for the truck, 69 for the tow bill to be paid at the shop)

loaded the truck up on my other child of mine, (91 5 speed 4x4 dodge w250, cummins turbo diesel)
so far ive got it too the house and pulled the intake off and it appears to me that whoever did the headgasket (which is VERY recent) coated the whole headgasket in blue RTV... I will be removing the head tomorrow more than likely since its pouring rain here now and im working outside my garage, the primary focus is all about fuel mileage! im moving about 30 miles away from work were im currently living and this will be my primary commuter! its good to be back in a Toyota!

that's what I thought as well, I was very surprised when I pulled the lower intake off and could see all the blue glop from around the block/head area, as well as all the intake manifold an what not, while the motor is apart I believe im going to do a few other things to the engine such as a EGR block off and relocate the fuel filter for easier access

Why disconnect the EGR? You might end up with pinging and having to run premium fuel or by retarding the timing. Relocating the fuel filter is logical, I wonder what they were thinking putting it in such a crappy place.

I know with diesel an egr delete is a benefit, I forgot about the pinging it may cause now that you mention it, it looks to be a new egr valve anyways so your correct I will more than likely keep it

finally got a break in the rain, and went and pulled the head the rest of the way, the headgasket isn't blown, and not coated completely in rtv just around the sides for some reason , BUT it appears somebody cross threaded one of the head bolts, and possibly didn't even bother torqueing it down, will this cause the coolant in oil situation? my thought is it would, ideas?

Red face

Just curious How did you test the AC with a blown Head gasket??

You and fuel mileage do not belong in the same paragraph!!

Being your a diesel guy now why not one of those 50mpg little VW`s??

Best of luck in any case.

Yes I know all about working outside the garage.

****Remember torque the headbolts to 65 foot pounds.

Its normal to put gasket material at the front two corners.

the truck would run great but was mixing coolant in the oil, did an oil change and drained coolant and ran it up the road! and I agree but RTV was all around the headgasket, going to tap the block, replace head bolts, check head for warpage and button it back together

Welcome back and glad to see you in a Toyota again. I had a head bolt that backed out and it did let coolant go everywhere. Looks like you got a great little truck. Two wheels do better on mileage and are easier to work on. I have thought of getting another 2 wheel myself. The 3rd gen trucks ride better then the previous models too in my opinion.

I don't have them but there are several on this site that run them. I don't see a whole lot of complaints. Do a yotatech/Google search.
