91' Toyota pickup project

So a couple of weeks ago I picked up a 1991 Toyota regular cab base for $800! But it has 238,000 miles, has a little rust, and the 22R-E is limpin' along with low compression but it still drove 3 hours home! So this is gonna be a pretty slow process considering I'm not gonna be driving for another year and a half. My plans are to first rebuild the motor, then throw a glasspack on it, a roll bar, paint, a lift, and wheels and tires. I'll try to get some pictures posted

Thanks Adam, I really can't wait for the finished product. My friends all have tacomas but I don't have 7 grand to spend lol. I'll try to keep this as updated as possible but I can't really get motor work done until we build a shop for my truck. Thanks for the input, cheers

Not much going on right now, but I'm going to pull my heads when I get the shop built.

Welcome to Yotatech! You got a nice truck to start with, these trucks have alot of potential and a huge aftermarket support, look forward to seeing what direction you go with your build. Looks like you'll have a nice size shop when your finished, that will make working on your truck alot more enjoyable!

Thanks rustED. The shop is going to be 200 square feet, at least it's enclosed. Hopefully the shop will be done in the next couple weeks so I can pull the heads and see what going on in their.

Here's an interior pic, little rip in the seat but I'm gonna get a mossy oak seat cover.

The only reason I own this truck is because it's a 5 speed.

Hopefully going to break open the motor soon, I found a significant amount of oil dripping off the tranny so sometime or another I'm going to need to drop my tranny to reseal all the mating surfaces.

Update

Today I went and got a compression tester because I'm dying to know what the problem is and we got some good and some bad news. Cylinder 1,2, and 3 have 160 psi which is good, but 4 has 55😭. I put a little oil down that cylinder and it upped the compression by about 15psi so it looks like I'm going to need rings on #4. Do you guys think I should just do rings on 4 or do a complete top and bottom end rebuild?

Update

Pulled the head this week and haven't really taken a good look at the valves on 4 but from what I can tell they look alright, I laid the head on board and didn't see any warpage. Onto the block, cylinders 1,2, and 4 look brand new but 3 has a single black line down the back, but it's not a scratch or gouge. Pistons all have play especially 2 and 3. Next step is to further inspect the head and then pull some pistons.

Well got some good news and some bad news. Good news is the motor looks great, has all new gaskets, and a new exhaust system. I took the head to a mechanic and he said it looks like the head gasket was leaking, so together the motor went. Now it runs but still has 55psi in cylinder 4 and now #1 injector is spraying gas everywhere so it needs new seals. But at least it runs. Next step is to adjust the valves and hope for the best because there is a possibility that the valves are too tight. So keep your fingers crossed until my next update.

Today was a good day. Finally ran on 4, the #4 exhaust rocker arm was adjusted about 1 turn too tight causing the valve to stay open all the time. It may have burned that valve and/or the valve may be worn but I don't care, she's a runner!
