HEY GUYS,


First post here,


ok so quickly, im not new Toyota, but I am a little new to the 22re engine. My cousin was big with the 22r and re back in the day but I was not. I spent more time with the 3.0 liter in a 4 runner than anything else.


so my question,


I got a 92 pickup, 4wd, 5spd with 22re. I make 2 trips a year approx. 2000 miles. mostly interstate. I usually don't drive more than 65 in almost any rig I have but was curious.


The truck is in 31/10.50 now. drives good. but the rpm at 60 mph (65mph) with the correction for the tire size is at about 2600 rpm. has anyone ever really had a problem with driving a long distances with this type of rpm. should I back it down a little.


Also just and FYI, this is my first toyo in about 6 years. spent most of my life with chevy and a v8.

almost forgot too, the truck is mechanically sound. ran the valve adjust, timing a tune up, oil changes are regular at about 2500-3500 miles since I live in the cold and in the city as well. also rebuilt the front end with new axle shafts included about a month ago

I don't know how far your drive would be but I drive home and back every other weekend from college, which is a 90 mile trip one way, mostly highway. I keep my rpm about the same as you do and have no problems, my engine has 250k on it. It can turn more when needed but I try to keep it under 3000. Drove it halfway across the state and back in one day a couple of weeks ago for an internship interview and had no issues. I run 265-70-17s which are truly 31 inches tall on stock gears and a five speed and while gutless once you get moving it isn't bad.

 

3000 rpm is just fine all day in that engine, especially as well as you've maintained it. It's got little pistons, little connecting rods, small crankshaft, lightweight valves with overhead cam... it's made to rev up. Running it at 3000 is like running 2000 or less in a 5.7 liter Chevy.

Just keep it full of oil and make sure it doesn't run hot, and it will be fine.

My 3.0 turns 3100 at 75mph and I've run that way 12 hours straight multiple times.

just wanted to make sure it wasn't out of the norm or I wasn't pushing things with it. The trip is 780 ish one way plus what ever I do in town or any other places I go. Usually ends up about 2000 miles. About 12 1\2 hours driving in one day so I just wanted to be safe.

 

oh and currently i got low miles compared to most its only at 146300 as of today

your truck's barely broken in! you'll be fine. FWIW i road tripped my truck with 4.88/31" combo - 70mph was around 3400rpms and I hit 200k on that trip. just make sure she has oil and I wouldn't sweat it.

 

I just drove mine from Oregon to N. Dakota with 30x9.5s and 4:10 gears, No problems untill I got there and it was -30* and the truck froze overnight.. Replaced the radiator, heater control valve, and the brake master cylinder and drove it home with No problems..
About 3400 miles round trip...

 

awesome thanks guys. Uzi that's funny I live in n dak. Good ol yoga has been starting and running with out an issue since it starting get down to those temps. Now its warming up to mid 30's day and low teens overnight. Something is wrong cuz by now we usually have highs in the single digits and lows at like 25 below zero. But January is still on its way, guessing its gonna be a cold second half of winter and prob a cooler spring. Good news the sun should come out in June or so lol.

Me or my truck didnt care too much for the -30*

 

Make sure the coolant is fresh. My veezee was getting hot with moderate hill climbing and I gave lots of attention to the coolant system, after which there were no issues. Drove 3000 miles without a hiccup afterwords.

ya 54 wont be seeing that around here again till about may usually.

as far as coolant goes. It is fresh, along with the cooling system. New radiator and t stat. As well as all new coolant at a 50\50 mix, at this point it may be about 65% coolant but that's mostly to counteract the -35 that it gets here in winter, not including wind chill haha
