Three questions about LC/IFS front brake swap
I already did this swap plus a dual booster, and it's great, but I have clearance issues with a lot of wheels (mostly steelies which I'd prefer). So I need to do something different because I'd rather not run spacers, nor downgrade my brakes.
So my first question... does anyone know if the original near-blank Pickup or Landcruiser steelies will clear the V6 calipers? I want those wheels but I can't find them locally and I don't want to pay for shipping if they won't fit. The clearance issue is not one I can determine remotely based on numbers. It's all about the dish shape, not offset or backspacing or anything.
Second...does anyone know by how much the 4-cylinder IFS calipers are smaller than the V6 ones, and if those will fit with stock steelies?
Third... in an IFS hub swap, can you use the original IFS rotors and keep the calipers further back from the WMS? All the writeups I've found use LC rotors and don't really explain why. I assume there is some clearance issue?
Thanks for any info!
(I really wish I had some parts trucks to play with. Is anyone near Santa Rosa with IFS parts that I could testfit any of this stuff?)

Not sure if this can help, but here is a thread I started on brake upgrades and people had good tips, I also explained in details what I did to make my ifs hubs fit, how I grinded my calipers for my wheels to fit, etc.

Yes, the IFS calipers should fit the SFA steelies. SAS guys use spacers to get front axle same width as rear.
The V6 are bigger in piston size two larger bore vrs I4 larger bore plus smaller bore.
You can look on rock auto catalog. Many of the brake rotor pages have one brand that spec's out dimensions of rotors. Or you could go to parts store and compare different rotors and calipers.
Don't know about/remember the issue with IFS hubs on SFA. If it corrected the axle width I'd've ran them instead of wheel spacers.
Hope this helps.

the SFA steelies I have (SR5 type) cleared my v6 calipers, the 15x10 steelies I got from my old man did not clear the calipers. They only need a little bit of room to clear, so I ground down part of one of the caliper ribs and ran a small spacer (like 1/8" iirc) to add just a bit more wheeling debris clearance.

The ones whose dish cross-section has little to no curve, that is, a straight shot from the WMS to the rim, do not fit (I've tried several sets):

I bought some 16x7 ones a bit like these, and they would've required at least 15mm (that's 5/8" for you non-metric folks) to clear the calipers with a little breathing room, perhaps 1/2" without.

So I came up with a set of four and a half (one's really rusty) steelies. They're supposedly off an 87, and measure 15x6, not x5.5 as I'd read. They do not fit. This time the issue is not with the dish, but with the inner barrel of the rim. There's about 1cm of interference with the caliper, right at the bolts that hold the two caliper halves together. Grinding that much, there, is out of the question. I'll get a picture tomorrow. My calipers are S12W off a 90 4Runner V6.
I really want to use these wheels, though, so now I'm looking into either 4-cyl IFS calipers, or grinding out my original calipers to clear the LC rotors.

I just bought a set of four of the older steelies, and for the benefit of anyone searching the question and finding this thread, the answer is:
Yes, 79-85 steelies do clear the S12 (early V6 IFS) calipers and LC rotors on an early solid axle with no spacers or other modifications. Clearance looks to be at least 1cm.
No, 86-95 steelies do not, without other mods.
More details:
The 4-cyl IFS calipers are just as big as the V6 ones when it comes to distance from the axis centerline (where the problem was with later steelies), but they are narrower and shorter. I can't imagine why they wouldn't clear the older steelies too.
Later V6 trucks had wider S13WB calipers, and I don't know if they clear those. I'd believe it either way.
