86 4runner 22re no heat

Well today was the first good cold morning we have had so I hop in and take off toward school, the engine gets warm so I flick on the heat. No heat! I pull over and both heater hoses are gettin hot ( 170) and the heater control valve is opening all the way. The fan runs and I can hear/see the blender door arm moving, and hear the blender door. So my question is is there a common problem with these?? Besides the more than likely stopped up core?

The painful part of heater work is pulling the dash, though not the hardest pay close attention to the routing of climate control over the brace as I broke one by miss routing. Going slow for first time and being really careful might take 30-40 min.

Sounds like something is clogged you know the heater core get all kinds of crap in it. I good flush might work.

You said fan is running but is it blowing air? maybe a rodent built a nest in heater that is blocking airflow.

There was a really good write up a couple months back by someone who cleaned out a bunch of crap. He found all kinds of nasty-Ness in there. His was a/c though. Would blow cold but hardly any air.

I dunno. Food for thought.

yes it's blowing air just fine. On all settings in all speed positions. I noticed while driving it to the store about a hour ago that if you turn the fan off for about 2-4 min an then turn it on It will blow hot air then go cold. Also the truck tried to run hot on the same trip. It climbed all the way up to 3/4- or higher but not red yet then dropped down to normal around half/a touch under half. Did fine coming back. Air pocket possibly? As I haven't had the truck long and do not know if te heat worked before I changed it from water to antifreeze

Definitely could be air pocket. Could be deposits could also be problem. Remember if there is stuff clogging the heater core if it breaks free it has potential of clogging in head thus leading to blown head gasket or temp problems. It was a painful lesson to learn.

Did you check coolant level? If you're out of coolant it won't blow hot.

yea I've seen that problem. I've got it soaking now trying to clean it up. I'm gonna flush it very well. It did run slightly hot this morning but got back down to regular temp quick. Never got in the red but got warmer than I would like.
