I've been having terrible surging and shifting issues in my 86 4runner with the 22re lately. Realized I cleaned throttle body without removing the tps which is bad news.. So I bought a new tps from a parts store.

In the process of installing it, the only way it lines up to the screw holes is if the throttle stop screw is open slightly. I know this can't be right but tried starting it this way anyway. As expected, high idle and surging.

So my question is this.. Is the tps I bought just a POS and doesn't fit right, am I missing something, or do I need to adjust the throttle stop screw (which the fsm says only do if entirely necessary).

And because I'm a somewhat noon, and want to be clear.. The throttle stop screw IS the fin that opens and closes as the throttle opens and closes, right...? Sorry but if I'm missing something I'd feel really stupid.

And I read frankenyotas thing on 4crawler... I will try it but it doesn't seem to explain how the tps or stop screw will account for the gap it currently makes..

 

This is where the stop screw would be located huh? After research I realized I probably don't have one.

Is this going to be causing a lot of problems? I'm going to try and replace it anyway just want to know how urgent it is.. Any why it would be missing

 

Disregard that last post.. I found the screw.. That was for the dashpot which I am missing I guess.

 

If your truck is a manual it would have one it's for the throttle to slow down when you let off the gas so it doesn't back fire.. you need to adjust your tps get a feeler gauge a multi meter and some gator clips and set it to the oem specs on 4crawlers page can be tedious but easy enough. The screw I think your talking about is the idle screw which is on the throttle body big flat head screw. I couldn't find what it was supost to be set at so I just tightened it and then backed it out till my idle was where I wanted it

 

It was a bad tps. I installed the new one (auto zone has a good one, oreillys couldn't find infinity from idl-e2 with .85mm feeler gauge.. If those shops are relevant to anyone). Got it all working now. Before this the idle screw wasn't even functional. I had a super high idle in Park and neutral. So much smoother now. I'm going to put a tach in and set the idle correct as well as check shift schedule because it has a little bit of roughness between gears sometimes. Thanks!

 

Did AutoZone adjust it for you ? Wondering because I know a lot of people on here would love to have it taken care of

 

No I had to adjust it on the TB itself. One of the readings was slightly off, was supposed to be between 0.2-0.8 kOhm but was at like .9. My only thought was that since it's the original TB that maybe the years of use has gotten it just that far off spec.. Not sure how big a deal this could be and u might be able to correct it but had to give this a shot before I called it a night. Definitely was successful I think.
