I can not get this problem resolved. The only answer any mechanic can give me is that I am having issues with my ABS. The brakes will backfire sometimes when I am attempting to brake especially at higher speeds and follow with a winding up noise. It really happens bad on snow and ice, but when its cold out it starts to do it more often. I dont know what to do, but id imagine it has to deal with the oversized tires. Anyone else had this problem? All and any help will be greatly appreciated as I am trying to sell the truck and fix this issue if possible before so.

 

What do you mean by the brakes backfire? Never heard that one before.

 

Are your rear axle seals leaking? That can cause strange issues with the rear drums. I doubt it's the tires. Can you explain the issue further? Is it the front or back?

 

I am pretty positive it is in the front, that is where the noise is coming from. It literally sounds as if something is winding up or a buzzing sound, its hard to type that noise it actually makes. And by backfiring I mean that the brake pedal actually starts pumping back so as I push down to brake it kicks back and pushes my foot backwards. And carries with the winding up noise. On pavement it will usually just do it one time as I am braking. On snow or ice though, it will do it repititively. There is really nothing else that happens, but the noise it makes does not sound right and the obviously having the brake give me resistance and not breaking its a problem. One of the mechanics told me that it was probably the ABS sensor or computer. And that nothing could really be done for that.

 

on snow and ice...... dude thats normal abs behavior. What you're feeling is the ABS pump Pulsing the brake fluid as to not have 100% lock up. If its happening on normal dry pavement WITHOUT hard braking, then I'd start with the wheel speed sensors. Make sure the ABS rings on the front axles are not damaged and inline with the sensors.

 

Agreed, that sounds like normal ABS engagement. The system bleeds down pressure on a wheel it thinks is locking up, and a pump kicks in to replace the bled off fluid so the pedal doesn't sink to the floor.

If you aren't braking hard enough to actually lock up a wheel and 'correctly' engage ABS, then the ABS computer thinks a wheel is locking when it isn't. It's probably an intermittent issue if the basic start-up checks done by the ABS system aren't catching it and setting off a dash warning light (open circuit, short circuit, speed difference in initial car moving check).

Sometimes sensors/wiring work fine until the suspension gets jiggled pretty well, at which time they'll fritz and send the ABS computer bad info.

They're magnetic sensors, the front ones can attract a little pile of rust particles (from the brakes) that will cloud the sensor readings. Also, look for cracks or breaks in the wiring from the sensor to the body.

 

I guess if one grows up with ABS brakes they are not to bad as it is all you know.
