Hey All,


Back again with another project completed. I made up a spare tire holder/ tire carrier for my Trail Gear bumper. First off I would like to say that this is my first biggest metal building project so far, I am sure there will be lots more but I am happy the way it turned out. About 30 hours went in to making this glorious masterpiece including painting but that does not include how many nights went into planning how the puzzle went together, sometimes you just gotta’ pick up that cut off wheel and just start cutting. The toughest part about designing this was finding a hinge that would work properly with my application, luckily I stumbled across 4Xinnovations and found that would do the job.

I would like to point out that if I didn’t have the Trail Gear bumper to start off with then I would have went with the 4xinnovations 4runner bumper with tire swing out because it would have been roughly the same money but you would not have to waste time fabricating yourself and you would also have the class two hitch… anyhow you guys probably already know all this crap. One last note, I welded it up with a 110V MIG Welder and it’s done a nice job holding up so far, Don’t mind my “Bubble gum” welds I got good penetration but I wanted to cover more surface and didn’t want to take any chances.




Materials I use:
- 2x2 1/8th” thick steel tubing
- 2x3 1/8th” thick steel tubing
- 1/4” steel plate
- Hitch receiver tubing
- Double shear hinge (4xinnovations)
- De-Sta-Co latch (EMS Offroad)
- Polyurethane door stop (EMS Offroad)
- Spot lights
- Raptor Bedliner (Black)

Very clean! I'm willing to bet it's pretty light compared to most tire carriers.

 

Awesome! It turned out great. Very similar to what I have planned for mine, except the modular nature is even better than I could have dreamed up. Does the tire rattle in the receiver?

Thanks for your comments guys! As far as weight goes it is probably lighter than others, let's just say I cold barely carry this thing around the shop while I was working on it. I did post the so you guys could use this build as a guide, everyone has their own way of doing things and sometimes it helps when you see it done beginning to end. So enjoy!

Maybe someone else can answer my questions.

What is the best height to mount the tire? I'd rather not block all of my view out the back window. Also, is it best to mount it centered like this or off set to one side or the other.

If anyone who has experience with these things want to chime in, I'd appreciate it.
