Extra sender in 22RE thermostat housing

I've searched a bunch and can only seem to find conflicting information on the extra temp sender that's in the thermostat housing of some (not all) 22RE's.

I'm finding anything from ECT to an A/T overdrive switch to A/C turn-off to ??

My truck is a manual without factory AC but it clearly has this sender and the factory harness clips into it. I think my ECT is in the normal spot on the intake manifold and my gauge sender is as well (between 2nd and 3rd cylinders on intake mani.)

I'm trying to figure out if I can run an aftermarket temp sender in this spot and just unplug this thing. Anyone out there with an 86 FSM that can give a definitive answer?

Thanks in advance!!

Tried just unplugging it to see if you lose the gauge reading or not?

Definitely don't lose the gauge reading if I unplug it. I'm certain the gauge sender is the one in the middle of the intake manifold and have verified that by disconnecting it.

Factory gauge is acting up (again...) so I want to be done with it and get a real gauge in there.

I guess I can drive around with it unplugged and see if I notice anything wonky.

Red face

What color is the wire under all the tape that would help narrow it down.
