1990 4runner 4wd not working (front diff grinding noises)

Hey guys! I own a 1990 4runner, 5-speed, brand new and beefed up 3.slow. About a month ago a was having transmission issues so i did a tranny swap. after doing so, my transmission problems were fixed! but, I shortly discovered that my 4wd had stopped working while out on a camping trip up in the snow. so i was like "oh well" i got around just fine in 2wd.... when i got back in town, i was slowing down at a stop light, and there was a horrible grinding noise that was very loud coming from the front end. when i slowed even more the tone of the grinding noise became lower and then ended with a loud "BANG" and the front end sort of jumping at the same time... this was happening occasionally and did not happen at any specific time, but usually happened when slowing down. I thought it might be a broken wheel bearing but it wasn't. Now there is just occasional grinding and no more of the "popping". Im starting to think it might be my front diff... but i would love to see what you guys think!

also, the wire that connects to the front diff and the goes up towards the oil filter and connects to the wire harness, that wire is broken and causes my 4wd light (in my dash) to not come on when in 4wd... could that have any correlation?
