So I just recently purchased a 95 4Runner 5 Speed 4WD and it is pretty much stock but looks like the torsion bars have been messed with and it looks bigger. But all the tires are bald and I do not know what tires to run. Right now they have 31 10.50's on them and I was thinking about running the same thing but maybe a different brand. I seen some nice Mickey Thompson one's or BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO Tires but I want to see everyone's opinion on this. Thanks!

 

What engine do you have...the 4 cylinder or the v6?

Duh...yea right. You probably have 4.88's I would believe. Or maybe the 4.56's with the manual. Maybe someone else could chime in here. There is an axle code by the VIN sticker on the driver's side door jam. Here's where to find out about how to find out what is in your truck. You could probably run a 32" tire with some effect but I think you would be stretching it with a 33". You would probably need 4.88's for the 33's and 5.29's for 35's. Do some searching and you'll find threads with more information on this.

 

A 5 speed will not have 4.88s factory. That's an auto only gear with the towing package (G144 axle code), you'll likely have 4.56. Have a shop uncrank those torsion bars in the front. They're hurting your ride quality (stiffer spring rate and no down travel) and they're tearing up your CV axle boots prematurely. There's a huge nut on the bottom side. I belive they're 21mm. They can put their air wrench on them and 10 seconds later, voila. Be sure to have it aligned afterward as your toe will be off. I would definitely go with 31s. You'll be able to do all the wheeling you want with them, and not have to worry about power loss (you need all you can get with the 3.0) and gas mileage. BFG definitely makes a great all terrain, but I chose a Firestone Destination A/T for price.

 

One stock version of the 3.0/5 speed combo matched 4.56 gears with 31 inch tires (your door sticker may say P225 tires, but that's a lie to avoid import taxes. The dealers swapped tires when the trucks arrived on the lot.) If you want to keep it stock, go with a 31x10.50. I really like my BF Goodrich T/A's. Good trail performance and awesome on snow and ice, plus pretty quiet on dry roads.

That being said, I'm considering going to 33x10.50's on my next tire purchase. I'm willing (I think) to take the slight performance hit for the sake of a bit more ground clearance. Haven't totally decided yet, though.

 

Yup. Seconded. This is how my truck was set-up from the factory. I like it, too.

RJR, I'm also considering a switch to 33's. I've always had 32x11.50s and it's totally fine.

edit: to the OP, I have a non-Toyota with 31" BFG AT KOs. No complaints at all except that sidewalls have been blown out several times. One tire has had a slow leak for 2 years. The tires are under warranty so it's just an inconvenience.

My Yota has some Les Schwab ATs that have thinner sidewalls, have been driven harder and have never leaked.

 

BGFs ATs are a tried and true tire. Always a good choice.

Personally I have some bfg all terrains @ 31x10.50r15 on a stock 3vze with a 5spd and I love it. I personally believe the BFG's are worh the money and there a common size so big tire shops usually have them stock
