Removing engine with tranny intact. Does transfer case have to come with it, or can the tranny be split? Where?

 

Are you talking manual or auto?? Then just what engine??

Just what are you using to lift the engine does it have enough height to get the engine trans combo out??

Then maybe you plan to cut the radiator support out??

 

98 SR5 4x4, manual, 3.4L using hoist on an a-frame w/casters. Not planning on cutting radiator support out, but I'm willing to do what's smart. Right now I have the front end jacked-up 6" on jack stands. I appreciate any good advice I can get.

 

If you have maybe 3 helpers you might be able to get it out in one piece.

It would be a slow process with lots of moving the attachment points This whole thing will be very hard to get out of the engine compartment

Then you could remove the transfercase .

It is just so much easier to lower the transmission and case down rather then trying to pull it all out.

Just why are you wanting to do this??

 

Appreciate your help. I'm rebuilding the engine. Took the advice of the repair manual and posts concerning difficulty separating tranny from engine while in the truck. My inclination all along has been to separate and remove engine only. Access to top bolts in tranny sounds difficult, but access and extensions from the shifter cover sounds do-able. I've always removed engine only in other vehicle rebuilds. Other advice? Thank you.

 

The way I get the Top bolts is to remove the Transmission crossmember

Remove the rear drive shaft

On a floor jack lower the back of transmission being careful that nothing it hits the fire wall as it comes down.

Simple to reach the Top bolts with long extensions.

use as few extensions as possible.

I never had major problems getting the bell housing and engine apart .

A little prying and twisting it pops right apart.

Don`t rush take your time making sure every thing is disconnected .

I would remove the top bolts then if you plan to leave the gear boxes in put the crossmember back in.

When the two separate the trans and T case will want to torque towards what ever side the front drive shaft is on.
