since installing a 2'' body lift in my 89 4runner. when trying to put the shifter into 2nd or reverse it doesnt stay in gear it pops out. Is this a common issue after installing a bodylift?

if so what should be done? looks like the rubber boot is getting in the way when you look from under the vehicle

Chances are it's the rubber boot getting in the way; pull the boot off, shift into 2nd and reverse and look at how close the shifter is to the floor board, now imagine a thick rubber boot there.

Easiest fix is a short throw shifter from Marlin, it raises the shift point about an inch which should help (it fixed the issue entirely for my 91 with a 1.5" BL).

Also check your transfer case shifter for clearance, I ended up having to get mine cut and an extension welded in.

 

Normally when you install a body lift anything bigger than 1", unless you have an automatic, you'll need to either:

A) trim the tunnel to allow the correct clearance. Remember, your body is now 2" higher but your shifter is in the same exact location. so its not getting the correct leverage.

B) extend the shifter. Pull the shifter out ( reasonably easy, if you're capable of doing the body lift yourself, you're certainly capable of this. just be careful not to break the aluminum cast lock ) and weld a 2" extension welded on the shifter. If you bought a kit, it should have came with an extension that can either be welded or bolted on. ( I prefer a welded shifter )
