94 4Runner eating coolant, head gaskets recently replaced.
I've owned a Taco for 10 years and I love it. Recently bought my wife a 94 4Runner with 272k miles - the price was right and it had all service records going back to the date of purchase. Head gaskets were done 60k miles ago, along with the water pump and timing belt. This is the 3.slow 3FZ-E engine.
Yes I have searched the forums - extensively. I've found nothing exactly fitting to me.
I failed emissions in Denver for hydrocarbons (unburned gas coming out the tailpipe) and carbon monoxide. Are the head gaskets just bad AGAIN? The radiator was replaced 30k miles ago, and I see no apparent leaks.
If anybody has encountered a similar siuation please let me know. I'm particularly concerned that there is unburned gas and burned coolant. It does smell like coolant as we pull out of the driveway, and until I hit 2nd gear going down our block. Then no more smell the rest of the way (even on longer trips).
Thanks.

How much coolant do you need to add every day??
Are you getting the white exhaust one gets with coolant into a cylinder all the time with engine running.
Do you have a external leak getting on to the exhaust once it burns off no more smell.
Pressure test your system should give you a better idea.
As your taking longer trips like 10 miles any major problems you would be coming home with some one else.
