Question '82 4x4 lb tow capasity???

Been wondering if the tow capasity was ever listed for this small thing. Motor is gas & stock with 245,000 on it but everything else i rebuilt. I await your answers, or not?

My '82 is a long bed 4x4 all stock with a frame thats off a bit from a idiot that made a U-ie in front of me;-( will deal with that one day...

Bill

If you intend to tow long distances, up/down grades or objects close to the 'rated' limit of this truck I suggest extreme caution. The brakes on these trucks are simply not built to handle severe towing duties. If you're just doing light loads and short trips, don't worry about it. If you want to tow anything of weight over long distance or on hills look into bigger brakes.

If your truck has tall wheels/tires your brakes will be even less effective than stock if you haven't upgraded them. The additional diameter creates more leverage on the brakes.

Also make sure your hitch system is rated to what the truck is. Hitches and bumpers are rated independent of the vehicle if you don't have a stock setup, so just be careful.

I took the LSPV out, and the brake booster/master can be upgraded to 1"/dual plus if you reinforce your tongue you can toe 2,000 pounds behind your truck (mine weighs 3500 from my reductions)

Are these replies timed?

shouldnt be towing more than 1500lbs so guess i'll be ok for mostly flat driving.. the gross weight is 4500 and wont have much in the bed so think i'll be under the 5500 mark ok. I did notice a diff in 5th going from 225's to 235's tires but there much easier to find esp in the wrecking yard. Not sure if i can get to the Marina on the 405 over the Sepulveda pass but can always take the long way on the 5 which is pretty flat, might go to long beach more anyway...

ps. Think the trailer and boat are around 1100lbs then add fuel....

just make sure the bumper is tight the ball is tight and that trailer should be strong enough
fwiw i could tow more than half a cord in my 2wd thru bone roads you'll be good but you said its got 245K so you should be planning on swapping that out soon anyways

That boat must be just a hull if it's only 1100lbs.

That boat is too big for you to tow. It will suck on any hill...and it will be a deathtrap in any kind of quick stop situation. Down a long steep grade it would smoke your brakes and push you over a cliff in a fireball like a Chips espisode.

My 87 runner had a hard time with a smaller boat than that. Trust me. Go try it...but beware.

Highlux thats funny. Dont think i'll be going fast enough with a trailer to get into real trouble but if braking give me issues might get brakes for the trailer, the front pads are semi-metallic with new rotors. The 1963 17 1/2' Boat weighs approx 480# as sold from factory, 320# for the motor and not sure on the single axle trailer? Think i'll be ok where i'm going. Its mostly flat and a short trip, 15 mi to one marina and 40 to another. If i had to go up to San Fran then i;d be hurting but might be able to do it on the cost hwy? I towed a very small 14 foot sail boat up the GrapeVine and spent lots of time in 2nd and 3rd, not a fun tow, just no guts in these stock motors.

The '82 4x4 LB has stock rear end and 5 speed so motor will help slow it down on a down hill run. Everything except the motor I rebuilt in the last couple years. Motor is strong but theres been a small head gasket leak that plugged itself but will open if i get it too hot so i baby it for now. Thinking one day to remove the head and check things out to see if it just needs a chain guide and gasket or who knows if i can wait for more $ I'll rebuild the motor, its my daily driver...
When i was hit in the right front i installed a 83/84? axle with the longer support as the axle housing was bent so everything got rebuilt.

ps. Sorry, corrected my error, Not 265's, Yes tires are 235-15 stock 5 1/2" rims and will be needing one or two extra one day.
