Ok, so I'm interested in getting a lift kit on my 1st gen 4Runner. The website I'm looking at right now is here: http://www.andysautosport.com/toyota...ion/lift_kits/
But I have a few questions:
1. The VIN says my 4Runner was built in 1988 but it was marketed as an 89. Does this mean I need a kit for an 88 or 89?
2. What is the difference with each lift kit listed on the site? (i.e. leaf spring lift vs. suspension lift?)
3. How hard is it to install one by myself? I consider myself a novice at this stuff but have the time to figure things out for myself.

The kits are going to be different from IFS to SAS. Some of the kits from trail gear are converting your IFS to SAS.

The procomp lift would be a direct fit for your 4runner.

I your rig is an 89 you would need an IfS lift from 86-89. Unless you wanted to to a SAS then you could get an ifs eliminator kit from trail gear or many other companies


As far as how hard it would be, depends on how much experience you have and how much work you want to put into it. Also depends on what you want to do with the rig. Hardcore off road, just lift it to look good and be a daily driver,etc...

2) 88 and 89 4Runners are exactly the same short of door panels and a few other things. both the same suspension

3) lift kits and suspension kits are exactly the same.

4) if you're handy with tools, you can easily install a lift with basic instructions. I grew up around Lego's, and my knowledge was simply gathered from picking up a tool set and figuring it out myself while reading the instructions.

5) what lift kit are you looking at?

 

I'd like to get something that will set the whole rig up 3inches instead of just the body, that way I can have more ground clearance.

 

How mechanical are you? an easy solution is a ball joint spacer lift and 33x10.50 tires to get clearance.
