This is my first post on here, just joined, looks like an awesome resource to have! I've got an '89 22re manual with stock 4.10s and stock 225s. I need a new set of tires this spring and am thinking of getting some 31x10.5 BFGs. (These should fit no problem with no lift?) Was just wondering if anyone has this same setup and if the 4 banger will have enough power with stock gearing. I find the truck is pretty sluggish as it stands with the stock 225s, and was wondering what my best option would be if I was to go with 4.56s to go with the 31s. I don't do very serious off-roading with it, it's just a farm truck that goes in the mud now and again.


I'm thinking of going with a 4" lift and 33x12.5s in a few years down the road once I'm done with college, but that will have to wait. Just starting into this, and it would be great if someone could give me some feedback!

Also, would it be cheaper to just re-gear both diffs to 4.56 or to try and track some down that already have 4.56s?

It will be manageable, but if you think it's sluggish now, it will only be worse. 4.56's and 31's will be a good combo. And yes, they'll fit without issue.

 

Those 31s will fit no problem. It's not until you get into the 32in+ territory that you may find a little rubbing. I agree with scuba that a 22re/4.10/31 combo may be pretty sluggish, but lots of guys have done it and lots of guys will continue to do it, so I wouldn't worry so much. If you're concerned about the "power" of your Toyota and don't want to shell out the $$$ for possible regearing, sell it and buy a late 80s Volvo wagon.

 

I have a 22re 5 speed with 31's and I think 4.10's.And it's very sluggish. Hills oohhhh don't get me started on hills.

 

4.10 gears in my 87' 4runner on 31x10.5 R15. It's slower than stock, but i'm used to it now. These trucks are just slow as dirt regardless.

 

It depends on your driving style. I had an 88 with 4.10's and ran 33x10.5 BFG AT's. It was slow but I didn't care because I drive like a grandma. My engine also wasn't very tired due to low mileage. It just depends on how you drive really. I couldn't get over 70 unless I was going downhill. I would say you will be perfectly fine. Just my thoughts though.

 

Thanks for the feedback guys. I might run the 31`s with 4.10s for now and regear if I find it too sluggish. It's a low mileage truck so I might be able to get by without the regear. I can always put 4.56s in later if I feel the need.

 

I have 22RE/4.10/31's on my 91 4Runner. Yeah its slow, it was slow before I put on the 31's, the difference isnt much, 4Low still works awesome, thats all I care about.

Im not gonna be running 12's anytime soon, so who cares.

 

Did you have the stock 225s on before you switched to 31s? And what wheel width are you using for the 31s?

 

yeah wheels were stock before I put on the 31x10.5 on 15" wheels, never looked back.

edit: I think the wheel width is 7"?? I am not sure, you can look up what wheel width is recommented for that size tire. I think its 7 or 7.5"

For 31x10.5 BFGs they recommend 7-9" wheels, I'll likely end up getting some 8" wheels.

 

unless you want new wheels for looks, keep your stock ones and save the money for something else. 31x10.5 fits perfectly fine on stock wheels - it was even an option for 4runners and dealer add-ons. the closer your wheel width is to tread with, the looser your bead seats, and more prone to losing a bead. If you're planning to ever switch to a larger tire, or something wider like a 12.5 tire, then yes it's necessary to buy new wheels.

i bought my truck with 31s/4.10/stock alloys and though it was slightly sluggish, but I was ok with it and actually got my best gas mileage with this setup. this is likely because the extra diameter drops RPMs at highway cruising speed. just remember that it also messes with your odometer/speedometer and will read LESS than what you are actually travelling. I compared this combo to overgeared setup (4.88s/31s) and a "stock" geared setup (4.88s/33s) on the same rig. The 31/4.10 setup will be very similar to the popular 4.88/35"+ setup that many wheelers choose because of R/P gear strength - in terms of how it drives and effects your speedo/odo.

 

Thanks, very helpful. I'm getting the new wheels to make the truck's stance a little wider and for looks (black wheels). Plus I want to keep my winter boots on the stock rims. Would you recommend a 7 or 8" wheel if I'm buying new for the 31s?

 

personally, i would go with 8" with 3.75" backspacing (1" offset from stock wheel). the reason for this is this wheel spec will still be acceptable if you decide to up your tire size again in the future to say a 33x12.5 or a 35+x12.5 tire, which many 4x4 owners end up doing after a while out of function and looks. buy once, not twice

just to toss another option out there, you could try to find a set of 16" wheels as your 2nd set. tire manufacturers have been slowly eliminating the 15" spec tires for larger diameters - reason being most brakes on modern rigs don't fit inside a 15. more sizes are becoming available in the larger wheel diameter, and seem more readily available on-shelf at shops. with a 16" wheel, you could likely find a moderately priced set of stock take-offs from a newer model Toyota 4wd (tacoma and 4runner) - most of these came with alloys and 31" equivalent. you want them black? paint is your friend - you can touch it up vs powdercoating.

 

Eh, its not so bad. I mean its slower than it should be but i have no issues getting to 75 with my 3.slo, although I have to keep my foot to the floor to get there and it takes a minute. Or ten.

 

Thanks for the help guys. Got the 31s on now, still running the 4.10s. Can barely notice a loss of acceleration compared to the stock tires (still slow as dirt). Could be because of my truck being low mileage.

 

you wont notice a difference. I went to 33s on 4.30s and it wasn't a problem.

The only time you really notice gearing is wheeling or going up hills. if you're doing neither, its no problem.

 

i've got 31's and 410's and will be putting 235's on it soon. i live in the mtns and the 31's suck too much power for my use.
