Question Do you think $100 is too much to install my exhaust?

Well, I went to have my cat and muffler installed today but decided not to do it. The guy wanted $100 to install it. That is going to include welding it up and putting a different tailpipe on it. Do you guys think this was too much?

Doesn't sound too bad to me, might be a little high. Ask them what all they are charging you for and then go from there.

Was this a chain store or an independent shop? When I had my Magnaflow put on, I paid $30 for the install at a local independent shop. Best bet is to just call around to a bunch of places to compare prices. You could also have some negotiating power there too - the shop that did my install had originally wanted $45.

Now all they did for me was to cut out the old muffler and weld in the new one, they didn't mess with the cat or a new tailpipe, so you should definitely expect to pay a bit more than I did. But that was also done in the SF Bay Area, where things should definitely be more expensive than College Station!

Most of the shops around me do it for about $30-40. So ya, $100 seems high, you might want to look around some more. I'm sure you can get it done much cheaper.

We charge $50 to put on a exhaust. They're just charging you an hourly rate more than likely. If they have to weld and such it should be higher priced. I'm sure all the bolts are rusted, and that means cutting them off. I would have just paid the price and got it done. Time is money.

Sounds high to me too. 50-75 sounds more like it. Of course every area may have different rates.

Here's the breakdown for the price:
$65 install the cat and muffler
$35 for the tailpipe

That's for welding it all on too.

This is an independent shop that I've heard does work for cheap. I didn't try to bargain with him but I guess I should have. I was expecting the whole install to run between $50-$70 so I was a little suprised when he said $100. The shop I usually use is back in my hometown. It's an independent shop too. I've never had any problems with his work so I'm gonna call him and see what he quotes me. I may just have to wait until Spring Break to get it done.

Thanks for the input guys.

Well I called my place back home and he quoted me $150 . I guess I'm just going to have to suck it up and stop being cheap :pat:.

I had my old muffler & pipe cut off, a peice welded infront with the new muffler and a new tailpipe and a tip welded on for about $110. Id say your quote is about right.

Cruizin01,

I checked out your pics . . . love the new Westin Safari Bar. What model is that? Do you happen to know if it will fit a '96 4Runner?

Hey Peanut, thanks for the compliment. All the bars are the same they just change the mounting bracket. I dont think they show the brackets for the runners. If you want to find out more info PM Vato Loco, he is or was going to try to fit one on his runner. Im sure he can help you more than me.

Here's how I would look at it:
$50 to install and weld
$50 to not get any rust (or steel) in my eye!
