Ive thought alot about fixing my 87s saggy butt. I have 4 racing springs laying around. 2 are blue 13x4 eibach and the other 2 are like 11x3.... They spin into each others coils quite firmly so I was wondering if I could use these to get a 5 inch lift out of and pretty much be 3 over stock. These being able to spin inside one another for fine adjustment and afterwards tack weld the coils together for a more permanent remedy...... What yall think of this.

 

Did I mention it would be no cut and the bottom spring is 2.5 id so it would seat on the bottom bumpstop perfectly and the top is 3.5 id so it would seat fairly well on the top bumpstop.

 

No. Just, no.
Definitely don't weld springs together, whatever you do.

 

What about just some how locking them tohether

 

I'm in this camp too but maybe you can get enough people of a different opinion to reassure you.

How is it a bad idea. My father used dual coil springs on the front of his drag car and it took excessive abuse and never gave way

 

To be clear I'm not saying you're wrong I just want to know your ideas on what is wrong with the idea. They are hard as heck to twist the small one into the bigger one so I don't foresee any backing out issues. Sure it will be incredibly stiff but the front isn't very forgiving either lol

 

just replace the entire leaf spring, why band aid it?

 

Spring inside spring might work if the sizes are near perfect fit.

Welding or heating destroys the temper of springs. Welding NO!

 

I am entirely to cheap to buy new ones. I'd also rather zuk it than add lift blocks. Plus I like being different

 

theyll be really noisey constantly rubbing against each other for one thing,and im betting really stiff doubled up.

 

Sounds like an accident waiting to happen...
But, it sounds like you are going to do it anyway despite what everyone is saying.

 

Well the reason I asked was I didnt have a perfect spring on hand to choose from, and I know this would work given the right application and spring length but im not sure im going to do it now pending bad yota crony reviews. I would like to find a way to do a no cut zuk mod in where the spring actually held to the bottom bumpstop instead of all willy nilly and ready to unload under the harsh articulation from daily offroading

 

Im quite a good fabricator when it comes down to it..... It might not look pretty but it sure as heck wont break

 

Try it yourself. Take a small spring (like a clothes pin spring) and heat up one section of it with a torch. Then try bending the spring in a normal fashion. I'll bet you dollars to donuts that it will deflect a lot more where you destroyed the temper and break within a few oscillations.

I cannot comment on how well using a dual-spring setup would work, but I do know that you need to find a different way to connect them than welding.

 

Are the two sets of springs different rates or are they all the same with the exception of the length ? If they are different rates then once you clamp or weld or whatever to lock them together you lose your spring rates and basically have one stiff ass spring. Is this what you're looking for ????

 

Given that you can get properly sized springs for the zuk mod pretty easily and cheaply I don't see the benefit to trying to use springs that you already have that don't sound to be the right size unless they are doubled up.

If the 11" spring is completely within the 14" spring then I don't think it would be a major safety issue, you are basically just making one super beefy 14" spring. But if you are trying to make a single longer spring out of two shorter springs, which is how I am reading the plan, then I still vote bad idea.

 

What I wanted to do was just spin the smaller spring inside the bigger one... pretty much one stiff 14 inch spring. I wasn't set on welding them but it was just the first thing that came to mind when attaching 2 metal pieces. I was unaware of the consequence of it. Would some sort of binding apparatus work or would they not back out since there is pressure on them
