Removing 2nd gen rear bumper

My buddy & I have seen a gold 2nd gen that I think was the owner of BigRocks Offroad that had custom made wrap around tube to act as his bumper. We want to build something like that. In the mean while we are so sick of our factory rear bumpers. If we took them off we would look just that much higher but look that much uglier. I mean it is and it isnt ugly. It takes getting use to. Is anyone running around without the rear bumper on the 2nd gen 4runner? Blue

Mine is pretty beat up and rusted in sections. Was tempted to rip it off and toss it not long ago. Would like to see the same thing as Blue here

no pics but i sorta look sans bumper

I mean my (formerly Leo's) rig has a home brewed rear tire carrier/bumper that sorta shows what yours would look like from the sides. I think the pictures that Leo did show the rear staight on. Let me try an get a pic (from the side) for you in the next day or so.

Remember, there's no spare underneath so I think it looks alright. I am also not running a big hitch assembly b/c the bumper has the space for the receiver/ball (to pull my little aluminum fishing boat occaisionaly) Kinda looks higher because it's so bare underneath. Leo cut the exaust back a bit so the pipe wouldn't be exposed when wheeling. Hello clearance.

I found that painting the underside of the body black where the bumper covered helps with the looks with the bumper removed. I've never ran without a rear bumper, but the All pro (basically the same thing as Badlands) doesn't really hide much. If you want to run without a rear bumper until you get yours built, painting the underside does help a bunch.
Oh yea and get your exhaust re-done/shortened, it will look goofy hanging low.

The underside exposed

Hard to tell in this pic, but the underside painted black with Herculiner
as well as the bumper.

Hope this helps

Thanks Fink!
All-pro just lowered their rear bumper price to $269 unpainted. Not sure how much shipping would be though

Was $300, not much yea, but still good compared to $300 (BigRocks) and ($375 Badlands). All-Pro's stuff keeps getting cheaper and cheaper.... and my SAS keeps getting closer and closer.

So much good stuff, so little cash

I want to know how this guy built his bumper. And I also want to know why haven’t the corporate people jumped all over this?!?! So many of us want and need rear bumpers like this. Anyone know where we can find one? Or who we can contact to build one? I’d get one in a heartbeat, even though my car aint runnin!

I only spoke to him once at Safeway while i was leaving. I was a dwork and said "nice 4runner" but couldnt think of what to say. I am pretty sure thats the owners rig. He moved down to Vancouver to get the biz booming. I wish he was still up here. I would let my rig be a guini pig for experiments. lol. They do such good work. The only drawback I see to running rear bumperles is how the tailgate sits lower that the sides by like 2 or 3 inches. I am so tempted to rimp it off, take it to Mission Muffler and ask him to bend some 2" tubing and have my buddy weld some brackets onto it calling it good to go. I also thought about cutting the side panels of the rear bumper to fit all custom like over the uglyness on the sides. Bondo it in place and shazamm. lol Blue

Thats................. fu&*ing sweet! I have never seen that design anywhere. I love how flush it sits with the top of the bumper and the dual square tubing look on the sides. Dayummm!

I know that guy built his own. He's over on 4x4wire alot. I think he's selling (sold) his rig right now. I don't think he's parting it out. But maybe see if he can build one

That’s part of the all pro lift when you do the solid axle swap or just redo your rear end. It’s supposed to give you crazy articulation in the rear. Crazy stuff.

Now I am curious, I know I have seen that but I can’t remember where…

I offered the guy $650 for that bumper. His rig is still for sale. I'd pay more for that bumper. Oh I want it!!!!
