85 4Runner rear popping when tire in the air

First off this forum has been very helpful along with 4crawlers site. I owned a 93 yota truck in high school that I basically rebuilt and I now have an 08 prerunner but have also recently acquired an 85 4Runner I'm slowly fixing up. Anyhow, the other day I was doing a little mild wheeling by my house (it is completely stock with the exception of 30/9.50r15 tires on factory wheels) and I was in 2wd and got the driver side rear tire off the ground and it started making a pretty loud clicking noise once I let the clutch out and it started spinning. I got out, locked in the hubs, put in 4wd and never heard it again. Tonight I was trying to climb a small incline with a couple of places that was uneven allowing the suspension to flex. I was in 4wd and went most of the way up and it got a tire off the ground and there was the noise again so while I backed back down with the clutch in, it made the most awful noise ever like a u joint in the rear was breaking. I took a different way out and once on the road again, it sounded fine. I searched and didn't find anything that related. I just put a clutch in a few weeks ago, all the u joints are in great shape and everything feels fine. It just seems like this noise is something in the rear end that has to do with a tire getting off the ground while, during, or after using the brake. My rear brakes are evediently worn out because my parking brake doesn't catch but after releasing the brake handle and trying to back up, it's locked down and won't move. I have to beat the arms the brake cables go to with a hammer back out so the wheels will turn. Yes I know I need to replace my brakes, I'm just wanting to know if that could cause the popping noise or if it could be something else. Thanks
