Lost 4WD climbing small dirt hill. HELP!

Hi, I'm new to the forum and new to Toyota's. I just bought my first Toyota 4x4 Pickup. It's an '89, has a rebuilt 22RE motor, 6" suspension lift and 2" body lift.

This last Sunday I was out with my dad on some trails. There was one spot where there was a hill we had to climb up. It wasn't rock or bumpy or anything like that, just smooth dirt, just had to climb up and out. My dad's little Jeep liberty climbed right out with no problem and standard street tires.

When I tried to climb it with my big 35" tires it started to spin a little bit and bounce a little bit and just as I pulled out on the top, we heard a loud CLUNK. Every since then, no 4WD. Goes in and out just fine but no power to the front wheels. I can't see anything visually that could have broken. CV axles look good, front drive shaft looks good... I don't get it - the hubs are locked and it's in 4WD but only 2 wheels spin. Any help would be very much appreciated. What do I check and how do I check it? Thanks!

broken ring and pinion or most likely a hub grenaded inside. with the hubs locked and the transfer case in 2wd can you turn your front driveshaft? if you can its the gears or hubs. if you unlock the hubs and put it in 4 can you turn the front driveshaft? see where im going with this?

in 4wd, does your front driveline spin? if not, it's likely t-case related and possibly the front output shaft if you're on stock gears with 35s.

I'm betting a hub as previously mentioned.

Thanks everyone for the quick advice!

I did some checking last night...

With the Hubs unlocked, transfer case in 4H and transmission in N, I looked under the truck and rolled it ahead a little and indeed, the front shaft is turning.

Then I proceeded to locking the hubs and found my problem... I think.

First the driver side, I felt a click as I started turning the hub from the unlocked position and a 2nd click when it locked. Over to the passenger side - This time when I turned the hub all the way 360 degrees, I didn't get that confirming click that I got from the driver side - almost like it's clicking into position. I tried unlocking and locking several times and it will not click when locking in.

In addition to this, I bought the truck with some known problems...
1) Passenger Side Knuckle was broken in half and welded back together.
Previous owner says I 'should' replace both sides
2) Passenger Side CV axle is torn. NOT clicking but torn.

This, coupled with my Passenger side hub taking a dump on me so easily on a little dirt hill, is leading me to believe that the front passenger area of this drive line has been through some serious trama! LOL

Thanks again for all the help guys, I'm a newbie but I'll be around for a while.

Just take the dial/cover off if the hubs and I'm sure you'll find some nice surprises
