81 Trekker, horn help
81 Trekker, had ignition problems a while back but seemed to be all fixed when I put in a new ignition switch. Here's my trouble now,
Hazards, headlights and blinkers work great. No horn. Napa here says theres no relay for a 81 horn, is this correct? I took off the front of the steering wheel wiped down the part that connects when you push the horn but nothing. For a minute, it sounded like I could hear a clicking noise when I pressed down the horn but now nothing. Suggestions?
Windshield wipers worked great until I put in the new ignition switch, now they don't work. New fuse but nothing still. Would it be the motor for the wipers? Is there a way to confirm this before buying a new one?
Much love for the help y'all, mahalo

There is a small spring loaded pin underneath the steering wheel that is actually attached to the turn signal/wiper switch housing that sometimes gets stuck down. The pin actually slides along a brass disc that is mounted to the back side of the steering wheel hub (comes off with the plastic cover on the back of the steering wheel). Check to make sure that the pin is still making contact with the disc and that the disc is flat (if the disc isn't flat then you will sometimes get horn function in only certain positions while turning the wheel). Also check to make sure that the wire connecting the horn buttons are connected to the disc on the back side of the steering wheel via a spade connector (the connector can sometimes come loose). There is no horn relay since it simply operates based on a ground interrupt. To test the actual horn, just disconnect the plug and put 12volts to the horn - if it honks, it works.

It would make a good replacement if you can actually find 22 ammo. All 22 ammo is scarce as hell around my way, so I suppose it's a good thing my horn works! First the government takes away my ammo, but I'll be damned if they take away my horn!!!! LOL

Would this have anything to do with my wipers not working? I assume it's the wiper motor, but how do you know for sure?

You are in luck, about a week ago I took apart my steering column to clean up the contacts on all of the controls so I have a pretty intimate knowledge of how everything comes apart. Before you go replacing the horn, I would try lightly sanding the brass discs that the spring loaded pin rides on. The reason being is that if it is dirty, corroded or varnished, you will get a bad ground connection needed to operate the horn. For example, if you have a bad ground on your starter then your starter won't operate correctly, right? Same goes for your honker. I cleaned both discs and the head of the pin with a piece of emory paper. While I had the discs off, I also used a body hammer to lightly tap them back flat. But honestly, if the pin is worn down or the spring is worn out then The 22 shell would be the perfect fix! If you test the horn and determine that it needs to be replaced then pretty much any generic horn will do, or perhaps you can find an oem replacement at Napa or somewhere. To test the horn, I would just find a 12 volt source and connect it to the + and - of the horn (either way, it won't matter because it is essentially a speaker so you can try both ways). In fact, you can actually use a 9volt battery, just won't be as loud.
As for your wiper issue, clean the contacts in the switch with some electronics cleaner. The intermittent function and my highbeams didn't work on my truck before I started my build and when I took the combination switch off last week, I can tell why - it seems as though the dielectrode grease that Toyota put on the contacts collected dust over the years and is preventing the contacts from making a good connection. That could be your issue as well.

I have a new OEM horn pin if you need one. Not sure if the spring is with it. Clean all your brass up like he said. I did that and did the washer trick and it fixed my horn right up.

Thanks guys for your great help. I took off the front part and am cleaning up those brass spots with Emory paper. Do I need to remove the whole steering wheel and clean up the brass ring on the back? This forum is great thank you all for helping this rookie out.

Yea clean the ring on the back of the steering wheel. I put a stack of one or two washers between my steering and the brass ring. It helps the pin make better contact if the spring is worn out and can't keep the pin pressed up with enough force to make good contact.

Do I really need a special tool to remove it?

No special tools. I think there are two phillips head was screws holding the middle section of the steering wheel to the back section of it. Once that is removed, you can access the nut that holds the steering wheel to column. I think it will be a 19mm nut. I lock the steering wheel in place and then take a socket to it. Once it's loose pull the steering wheel, it will be very tuff to pull it off the shaft so I try and use small pry bar to get it loose. Once it's off, you have access to ring on the back of it and the pin on column. When you take the steering wheel off try and mark the wheel and column so you can line then back up exactly the way they came off!

For the life of me, I couldn't get the wheel off myself today. Im not sure where to put the crowbar to pry it. I will check my Napa tomorrow since the one here isn't open on Sundays. Windshield wipers started working, so thanks for the advice on that.
When I do get the wheel, off is there a way to replace that brass ring? From my glances at it and trying to sand it while attached it doesn't look flat/flush. I assume it is to be flat.
@83toyota88, what do you want for that pin?
thanks

The brass ring needs to be flat, but once you get the wheel off you'll be able to unscrew the ring so you can clean and straighten it. You'll see that it is pretty straight forward once you get the wheel off.

I found this on eBay tonight. Its the horn contact pin. I figured you might want to scope it out. The seller is legit and has a bunch of new old stock Toyota parts and i have bought parts from him before

Found a few .22 shells and had them sent to me. My parents in California went to try and buy some ammo, but said that thrower for .22 was backordered for weeks. Everybody be stocking up on the mainland I guess.
I put a new horn in, resoldered the wires before they go into the horn and am back to getting that faint horn sound. I am still having a damn issue trying to get the wheel off. It worries me to use the pry bar because right behind the wheel is a plastic coupling that is for the turn signal, do I remove this whole thing too?
Windshield wiper stopped again. Suggestions for ordering a new motor for it? Fuse is good and checked all wires so I figure it has to be it.

When you are on a single picture in photobucket, NOT your library overall view, their is box to the right called "Links to share this photo". The bottom one says "IMG". If you will click on the line of text next to it, it will automatically copy the link for the image. All you have to do after that, is paste it into your response on here and the picture will show up.
