Bearings replaced?
Buddy of mine has a 3vze pickup. Just started a bit of tickin/knocking. My question was what are everyones opinions on changing the rod bearings out by just pulling the pan and doing it that way? I got the idea from Toyota4runner.org Heres the write up a guy did on doing them. Only difference is buddies isn't SAS'd.

I have actually done it. And most likely it's not just the bearings wearing out they are just the first link to start to break. When I did it I got about 8k miles on a Saturn motor and then the rest let go. But hey at least the bearings looked good. I wouldn't recommend it unless you want to probably tear back in to motor in under 10k miles. Just FYI.

Ya so I guess its either that or just run it until its done and swap another lower km 3vze in. It just started like a month ago. Only really noticeable on idle. Otherwise it runs like a champ and tons of power still (for a 3.0l haha)

If your going to run it till it blows. Honestly run some z-max through it in the oil. I had a wheeling buddy that had a Subaru with that in it. We were screwing around one day a ripped the oil pan off they bottom. Oops. Drove it back to his house with no oil. About 20 miles. No noticeable noises or knocks. Drove it for another 30k miles. Then sold it. I know all that stuff is "snake oil". But I can't think of another reason why that motor didn't puke all the crank bearings. Don't flame me for recommending this stuff it's a situational recommendation.

If you only hear it at idle, have you checked actual oil pressure? Oil pump could be worn, oil to thin, or something similar. I'm not sure I would condemn the bearings yet, until I knew what the root issue may be.
