Gaskets on either side of carb spacer

Use them? You know the plastic heat spacer that sits under the carb? When I took off my old carb, there were no gaskets on either side. No leaks. But since I had the gaskets with my rebuilt carb...I figured I should use them. Now I have a leak at the base of the carb.

I figure it could just be that I need to tighten it down more, but I have it pretty tight...

I know the spacers Toyota sells for 79-83 trucks come with gaskets glued on to both sides. But Toyota doesn't even sell the spacer for a 78.

So...Think I just need to tighten the mounting bolts down a bit, or should I just ditch the gaskets?

Ok.

So probably just make sure it's super tight...I'm afraid of cracking the spacer, especially since I know they don't sell them anymore.

I used both of mine with the rebuilt carb install, I figured if it came from the factory already attached to the spacer than they should be used.....make sure all surfaces are flat and no burrs or old gasket stuck to it. If the leak continues wouldn't hurt to put a light coat of Permatek gasket sealer on each side of gaskets to help seal tight.

Ok, thanks.

I just checked it out again on my break. Apparently when I said I had it pretty tight, what I meant was that I thought I had it pretty tight.

I went around to each of them a couple more times and tightened them up. I didn't have time to start it up and check for leaks again, but it definitely wasn't as tight as I thought it was.

Hopefully that fixes it...

It was driving me crazy that it started right up with the new carb, but wouldn't idle!

From experience, too tight can also cause leaks, I suggesting tightening to shop manual specs. Silicone rtv can also save you some trouble but you shouldn't have to use it.

Ok. Well, how it was before tightening it...it leaked. With it as tight as I feel safe going, it still leaks. So I guess I'll take it back off this weekend and see if there's something keeping it from getting a good seal, and use some Toyota FIPG while I'm at it.
