I hope someone can help me with this. When I bought my '89 4Runner, it had a ticking speedo and the seller gave me this new, OEM cable that was supposed to be the correct one. It's not. It was fine on the the trans case side but the end that plugs into the speedo was different. I suspect it is for the '89 or later pickup? Any ideas? I am needing some cash right now so I'm gonna ebay it or if someone here needs it, we could talk. Thanks a lot!
edit: the socket on the speedo side measures 19mm. inner diameter.

 

white end connects to the speedometer end. metal end connects to transfer case...

hardest part for me was taking dash apart... had to figure out what not to break.

as you disconnect and ull the cable, connect a string to one and use it to pull. since the cable goes OVER the tranny, kinda hard to snake you hands...

 

I know how to replace a spedometer cable. The fitting on the back of my 4Runner mates up to a different part # cable. I know quite a few people have replaced their cables, so I thought someone might recognize this style.

 

well that looks like the ones i replaced on my 90...

although, the parts dude originally gave a diff part #. which was for a truck. but he checked his book and grabbed the right part #. i viewed them side by side and they looked the same... maybe it was slightly longer...

it could also be the speedo cable for a '89 non-sr5. 89-4run on here gave me instructions on how to change the speedo cable in my '89, and some of the placements of things (like where the cable comes through the firewall) were different on my truck. he has an sr5, and i have a dlx (the kind with the base instrument cluster). so maybe the cables are different between the two models. the cable does look like the one i have on my '89.

 

I also have an 89 4runner and I recently had to deal with this problem. That is the exact same cable that the dealer sold me and it is exactly the WRONG cable. The white plastic thing on the end is way too big and the only thing that holds it to the back of the cluster is the cable end sitcking out. The square cable end broke after about 5 minutes of running. I went back to the dealer and he found and ordered the correct cable (supposedly) by searching my VIN #. I'll let you know if the new one is good and give you the part #. BTW, my original cable is identical to your picture, except that instead of a huge white plastic thing one the end it has a gold colored end and a small white plastic clip to hold it onto the cluster.

I'm having a similar issue. Bought a 1990 SR5 4WD Manual, and the speedo needle was bouncy as hell. After a few weeks, it died entirely. Bought a new speedo cable (last part i ever buy from Amazon) that was just a cable core. Went to pull out the old cable and it doesn't come out of the collar. Found out while I was behind the cluster that the cable is still just fine, but the collar that latches onto the cluster is entirely too big in diameter. The reason it had stopped working is it just fell off the cluster. Previous owner seemed to Frankenstein a few parts together, so I'm trying to figure out if he installed a new cluster that was incorrect, or a new speedo cable that was wrong. Maddening.
