86 4Runner 22RE Starts up and sputters

So I bought a truck that was sitting for 12 years off of the original owner. The truck needed a fuel pump when I bought it. I put a walbro 255 my friend had laying around. yes, I know overkill on this motor. But it was free. lol

Anyways, we got it to run on the 12 year old gas after starting it on ether. It would idle and run on it fine, but eventually giving it gas sometimes would lead the truck to stall. But it ran somewhat.

The last few times I went to start it, it would idle a bit then die out. So today, I decided to finally drain the tank. I dropped the plug and then refilled with a few gallons of fresh gas. Still have to start on ether and it'll idle for a minute or so then sputter.

I'm suspecting its the filter that's plugged. I have a new one in my garage I will install soon. But I'm open to other things to check. Itll start fine on ether, so I know its a fuel delivery problem. I pulled the spark plugs and cleaned them for good measure.

So I changed the fuel filter today, still not running correctly. Does the same run for a bit and sputter.

I got no fuel coming out of the return line. I swapped the regulator today, and for ˟˟˟˟s I primed the pump with the regualtor off and nothing came out. Driving home just now it hit me, maybe the pressure line is blocked...

I'm open to suggestions.

Diddled some more with it this past Monday. The pressure line seems okay, but I still got nothing out of the return.

I put a Walbro 255LPH pump in the truck. Is it possible it's building too much pressure?

do you have access to a compressor, or at least compressed air in a tank? try blowing out the fuel lines, and everywhere that the fuel flows.

if the pump was building too much pressure, you certainly should see gas coming out the return line.

there is a filter sock that installs with the pump, is that still in the tank? are you trying to pull fuel through it?

If you started and ran it on 12 year old gas, it probably wasn't gas anymore. More like varnish. I think a complete fuel system cleaning, o replacement of all fuel lines might be in order. Also, that crap will turn to a hard varnish on valve stems under heating. My dad bent pushrods in a ford 400M running old gas thru it. Glued the valves shut, pushrods became the weak point and bent. Even pre-ethanol gas is completely useless after about 2 years in fuel tank.
