91 Toyota 22re 4x4

Hey guys,

I'm new to this website and I was wondering if I can get a little advice? I just bought a 91 Toyota 4x4 with a rebuilt engine that has only 10,000 on the new engine ( Have receipt for work done). Also it has some other new things on it... The bad is that I have to replace the cv boots but ill probably replace the whole axle. (Both sides).... 4x4 works great besides the grinding sound because I need the boots fixed. Also the heater only works on high. It has a rough idle at start that's doesn't last long but I need to fix that also. So I got this truck for 2,800 and I was wondering if I got a good deal or if I got stiffed?
I plan on keeping this truck the rest of my life. I want to just keep working on it. Runs great ..
also I had to put some silicon around the windshield.. hopefully it stops the leak.

It sounds like you got a pretty decent deal. I have an 89 which is identical to yours other than the year.

If the CV joints are grinding then you'll need to do more than just replace the boots. You can rebuild the joints, but it's easier to just replace the whole axle assembly. If you want you can do that then rebuild the old ones and see if you can sell them or keep them as spares. If you don't have manual hubs you should think about swapping in a set when you do the axles. They're a great upgrade.

As far as the heater, mine had the same problem. You need a new blower motor resistor. It's an easy fix and it's pretty cheap....about $35.

Rough idle....start by checking for vacuum leaks. A propane torch can find them pretty quick. Check your timing and idle speed also. The best thing you can do is pick up a repair manual. Haynes or Chilton's are good and can answer a lot of questions for you. If you have questions you want to ask here make sure you do a search first. There's a lot of threads here about a lot of things and people tend to get a little upset over repetitive questions. Other than that, make sure you have a good camera. People here like pictures too! Welcome to YotaTech!!!

Welcome. Best way I found to do pics is use a photobucket account....then use the insert image button...and paste in the link from photobucket.

You are beggining a beautiful relationship with a Toyota. You are gonna have fun with that truck and always remember it.

Looks good! Body looks to be in good condition and the tires are nice. Does it have a lift? How about a picture of the engine?

Thank you for the advice

Thank you for the advice, I will make sure I do a search before asking questions. Also I have a couple more pics I will put up in a second. The tires I bought new. The engine is a 22re and it does not have a lift (would like to in the future). I had to buy a clip for my back window(pain in the ass) went to Toyota and it cost me 45$ for the latch. I bought a cv axle from napa for only 60$. funny how that clip cost so much. I need to but another cv axle for the passenger side also. The truck even came with a 12inch sub(I don't really need but sounds great) I will post a lot more detailed pics in the near future.
i'll post a couple more pics I have in my phone right now.
Thanks again guys

It has the hella lights on it but I bought some KC covers (because my name is Kc) so it works out

I'm looking at putting a lift on mine also. I don't want anything huge so I'm looking at the Old Man Emu lift. It's only about 2.5", but it'll fit a set off 33's nicely. What kind of wheels are those? They look sharp! I've been looking for a set similar to that, but in black.

the tires are 31's

Got the tires brand new for about 900 through Americas tires company. Great tire but sometimes kicks up huge rocks and scares the ˟˟˟˟ out of me lol.

Nice truck man you'll soon find that you're going to fall in love with it and it'll take all your money (sorta like a woman from some aspects). Haha but sounds like you got a good deal especially with a basically freshly rebuilt engine. Rough idle at start up could be a couple things but I'd check out your cold start injector. Theres a lot of good info and tons of knowlegable members thatll help steer you in the right direction, good luck and welcome to Yotatech

As previously mentioned, be sure to get you a Haynes repair guide.. The Chilton is a useful resource to have..if and ONLY if every other copy of the Haynes guide has suddenly gone missing. The Chilton is worth less than the paper it's made of.. Just saying. I like those tires on that truck! What size?

Pictures of my engine and torn boot

Tomorrow I will be attempting to flush the heater core and change the resistor. So I can get all my settings back with hot air, not just blowing on high with cold air. Also I watched this video on surging idles and i'm going to give it a shot..
.
I really need to fix my cv axles but am nervous to try.

I just tried to silicon the front windshield and it still leaks like crazy lol... If I call AAA and have them replace my window, will that fix the problem? sorry if it's a dumb ? but I just don't want to pay for a new windshield and it still leaks... I have a crack on the passengers side so I will need to replace it anyway but I tried to go the cheap route with silicon but now I don't know what to do? .(since it didn't work so great)

mine had a serious leak on the passenger side, right onto the front floorboard, by the computer.

but there is also a big cancerous rust spot on the door seal area of the door piller, about two-thirds of the way down... I assumed that the same leak caused both, so I siliconed the windshield, as a temp fix.

it still leaked.

the other day I went out in the rain, pulled the interior panel and computer, and saw that water was pouring in onto the floorboard at a hole where the radio antenna comes into the passenger compartment... I tweaked the rubber gasket, which cut down the flow a lot, but it still needs work.

check that area on your rig.

I probably still have another leak, possibly in the drip rail area, that cause rust in the door pillar.

Your switch in the dash is most likely broken and/or short circuited. You'll have to remove the dash covers (not as bad as you would think) and then get to the switch. Taking it out and testing should reveal if it's broken or not.

As far as your windshield goes, you could probably just get away with new molding. Call up one of the auto glass repair shops (some will come to you) and ask if just replacing the molding is an option and would fix the leaks. It only lasts so long. Just changing the windshield will not fix the leak.
