Hello,

I have a 93 toyota hulix with a new 2.4 TD motor with a auto tranny. Just wondering if anyone has had a problem of a clunk at take off from a stop once in a while. Trying to narrow down what It could be.

Seems like it's felt in the seat and pedals.

Also after off-roading a couple weeks ago there seems to be loud squeaking when turning. Possible cv shaft? Boots look fine. and then almost metal on metal sound when full lock going over anything.

Sounds like a U joint to me for the clunk when stopping and going its a quick fix costs about 40 or 50 bucks

Squeaking while turning sounds like a dry cv shaft to me

 

When I got my 87 back and got it running. I would take off and here weird noise from the back. I was pretty freaked at first. Was the spare tire mount deal swinging around. Kid I got my runner back from had taken tha spare out.

Maybe you will get that lucky...

 

That actually happened to me with my pick up after I did the U joint and thought another one was going haha

Sometimes the steady bearing goes to in the 2 piece drive shafts but then you'd notice vibration while driving aswell

Also have you ever greased your truck reagular maintenance like that will reduce things like this happening it kinda sounds like you went on a wheel and worked the grease out or just never greased and they are dry. try greasing your whole truck when you do the U joint before doing the CVs could save yeh a few bucks without doing the harder labor

 

Yep greased in June. Due for another ASAP. Will do that first before cvs.

 

U-joints for the clunk, steering stops for the creaks and groans while turning. Steering stop noises are annoying, but not harmful. You can put some grease on them to quiet them down for a while but there's no real good long-term fix. Just learn to appreciate the uniqueness of your truck.:-)

Last question. Are these specific parts of the drivetrain for the Hilux the same as the counterpart 4 runner? I'm guessing they are.

 

when you unbolt the ujoints, check the rotational play at the flanges... mine has over an inch on the rear pinion flange, so it clunks... not sure what i'm gonna do, there isn't hardly any in/out play.

I would guess that the parts are the same, for matching years.

 

Well I did the u joints and lubed up everything. Seems to have worked great. Although I did have to cab it down to a local shop and have them press the u joints out as mine were seized in. They even had to cut one of the old ones out with a torch. Must have been a original. Great thing about that is they didn't charge me anything for the work. Which is awesome.

Pretty much everything on the Hilux is perfect now. Will be making a build thread for the future diesel 4x4 fun.
