new marlin l52

Ok I've had my new tranny in for about two months now and when I changed it I replaced the clutch and all the bearings and flywheel, but it's making all kinds of noise especially when I'm in forth and let off the gas it sounds like its grinding in there. I just can't believe this after all the money I've put in this new transmission and its making all this noise. Has anyone installed a new marlin tranny and had this happen or can someone try to help me as to what is going on here. I heard from a lot of people that marlin is the best around so I went ahead and got it its just very very frustrating.

Call marlin and ask them. I'm sure they'll work with you directly instead of hoping they see a forum post.

I had similar issues, and so did a few other people. They sell a lot of trannys to racing teams and people not posting on forums and have a low istance of problems (if you believe them), but there was a time a few years back when maybe 4 or 5 people on the Marlin forum were having serious issues.

Issues like the tranny made a ton of noise...they sent it back...this time when it came back it was popping out of gear...I think one guy sent it back three times before it was right.

My own L52HD started popping out of gear about 3 months past the warranty.

They are good, solid trannys and they're a good company, but they make mistakes.

They do a good job of making things right if you call them.

But I agree it totally sucks to put in a new tranny (not a small job), then realize you're going to need to pull it again, send it back...have them work on it...get it shipped back...install. And your truck is useless during all this.

But yeah...make sure everything else is good before you pull the tranny.

But if nothing made noise before, you didn't mess with anything else, and did the clutch correctly, it's got to be the transmission.

4th is a direct drive gear, if that helps diagnosis...But I'd just call them and let them know what's going on. They know transmissions...

Great, now I'm going to be paranoid, as I'm waiting on a 4 speed from them. I like the idea that you can just swap trannies and send your old one back to them.

Was (OP) your truck making the sounds before you swapped the trannies? A loose rear differential pinion nut can allow enough slop in those gears to grind when you let off the gas. And sound can be carried through the components. It's hard to pin down.

Well I called them and they said to check nd replace joints and see how it does and call back. Now I want to say this to but whenever I shift into a gear sometimes and let out the clutch I here my drive shaft (I think) make a noise like someone tapped it with a hammer like it kinda pops so I don't know what that is it never did that before. But that nut is staked I would find it hard that it came alose a bit but I'll check this weekend when I do my u joints. And thanks for the help and more would be great

So they said "spend more of your money first, then we'll check into it"

Check, yes. Replace? Only if they need it.

Surprisingly enough, pinion nuts do come loose.

The little *ping* when you let out the clutch, if it's the same one I'm thinking of...was hard for me to track down. My 83 did it. Even after a tranny rebuilt, t-case rebuild, swapped rear diff and having the u-joints checked out multiple times.

I just learned to live with it.

That's exactly what it's like. And I always assumed u-joints or pinion nut play. I brought my rear shaft to a driveline guy twice. He finally said "I'll replace it if you want me to, but it doesn't need it". He said the u-joints were fine.

Like I said...Marlin L52HD tranny, I rebuilt the t-case, rear d-shaft checked over by a professional, swapped rear diffs. And still the ping was there. Maybe the used rear diff I got had the same play in it my old one did. Who knows?

But it never got worse, never became an issue. Not saying yours will turn out the same, but that's what happened (or didn't happen) with mine.

Whatever happens, good luck! Not sure how much experience you have, but with one or two friends, the transmission gets pretty quick and easy to do, once you've done it two or three times

My first time took an entire 8-hour day, just to get it out. But the last time I did it, we could have it in or out in just a couple hours, with pretty much no swearing or frustration.

Well I thank you for the help man and I did my tranny swap myself with the help of my brother getting her pulled out and back in, but my problem was like yours it took forever long to get it out it was almost like it didn't have enough room it took forever to get the input shaft to clear

Compared to the little front wheel drive cars I've swapped clutches on, I love working under 4WD pickups. You don't even have to jack them up, there's so much room under them. My tranny jack can barely go high enough to catch the Toyota tranny.

Yep. I miss being able to sit up under my 83 to work on it...

On my 78 2wd, I can just slide under it, on my back, with the frame about 1/2" from my nose...
