Hey everyone im away from my tools and my books and came back to my 89 4runner to find that it was making a terrible noise. Upon inspection i found that the fan shroud had broken off of both its mounting bolts on the passenger side. Ive got a few questions...

First, what would even cause this to happen? the truck was fine the night before.

Second, i was not the last person to take this apart, should i call the mechanic?

Third, do i have to pull the radiator to get the shroud out?

and finally, Does anyone know any good pick a parts in the western Los Angeles area?

 

First, Being a stationary part that doesn't move i would think loose bolts or fan/fan clutch let loose and hit it.

Second, YES, call or return to whomever installed it last.

Third, No shouldn't have to, but probably will have to remove fan/fan clutch assembly.

And finally, pic a part, Google it, there's a few different ones with different names.

 

On trucks w/AC, there is a bottom arc to the shroud that clicks into place. http://personal.utulsa.edu/~nathan-b...52radiator.pdf Remove that, the bolts holding the upper part of the shroud to the radiator, and it slides right up.

The shroud is plastic, and in your case 24-yrs old. Take a look at the bolt holes; I'll bet you'll find the bolts are still there and the shroud just wore out from vibration, heat, etc. If you want to rag on the mechanic, that's your business, but you're probably barking up the wrong tree.

Good luck with a pick-and-pull; plastic shrouds aren't the sort of item that remains in pristine condition even once the rest of the truck has collapsed into junk. It is definitely worth having a shroud, though, so if it were me I'd at least give junk yards a try. DO take the old one with you; the shrouds vary depending on engine type, ac, and probably other things I have no knowledge of.

 

You can get the shrouds from Toyota all day long.

 

Yah i decided to leave the mechanic alone, i'm looking at fixing what i have to get by with zip ties and calling the toyotas in the area to see what the cost of a new one is... the nearest junkyard is 30 min away which isn't worth it for a gamble.

The application data is not accurate. I think the company that manufacturers those shrouds says someting like 1990-95. It fits my 88 just fine and I don't see any reason why the 89 would be any different from the 88 or 90-95.

That smiley face part just clips on to the fan shroud at the ends by two metal clips. If you have yours from the old one, great, if not, Toyota still sells the clips for $0.26 each. People on ebay are trying to sell them for $5. They're a quater at the dealer.

There were 4 10mm or 12mm bolts (I think 10mm) holding the fan shroud in. You have to remove the upper radiator hose. I had no problem at all getting the new shroud past the cooling fan with the radiator still in. Its a 15 minute job. Very easy.
