Stupid question: where do you hook up a 2-wire dwell/tach?

Bought an old dwell/tach for cheap and want to check my idle speed. It has two wires, red and black alligator clips. I hook the red to the IGN terminal in the diagnostic box and the black to...? I dont want to damage the coil so I figured Id ask before just poking around with the lead

(The FSM shows a 3 wire tach)

I always thought it was red to coil (+) and black to coil (-).
I could be wrong though.

Typically red goes to the negative terminal on a coil and the black goes to a good ground. Assuming your engine uses the older style coil and points.

This is for a 92 22re. Is that still the correct procedure?

I have a 22re and an Actron 2 wire tach. Red goes to the IGN diagnostic port and black goes to ground. I believe my Chilton's manual shows how to hook up a tach, I can find the page if you are still afraid to hook it up, but I'm almost certain.
