Do you have any other symptoms besides the code? What's going on/ acting up?

the only thing noticeable is a hesitation in 1st gear and reverse but i also have the O2 sensor code showing up i need to put one on. im just curious about how to attempt at the starter signal code.

Check Engine Malfunction Indicator Lamp(MIL) Illuminated...?

Does truck start-up and run ok..?

Excessive cranking time..?

Possible Ignition switch circuit fault.

Distributor pick-up coil fault...?

Ignition system in poor health..?

--Code #43 Criteria--
*NO "STA" signal to ECU until engine speed reaches 800 rpm with vehicle not moving.*

the truck starts and runs ok. the only thing i notice is if i climb a hill in 1st or reverse it wants to die out. i dont have a O2 sensor on the muffler i need to put one on. also once in a while the starter will grind on starting but will crank on the second or third try.

Sounds like you have multiple, unrelated issues going on. For the starting issue, if it sometimes doesn't start engage until the second or third try, that's a problem in itself, and I would venture to say that's probably what is causing your code... That is the starter spinning freely and your ECU not picking up any rpms. Either way, and regardless of whether this is the true source of your code, it's worth checking out. You don't want your starter chewing up your flywheel/flexplate. I'd pull it out and see if the bendix gear (the little gear on the starter) shoots out properly and doesn't have any sticky spots. Hopefully not a lot of gear damage has been done.

As far as it bogging down in 1st and reverse... well, first of all we need to know if you have an automatic or manual. I'll guess manual. If this is the case, the first thing I'd do is get an O2 sensor in there. Running without an O2 will force the ECU to run a baseline fuel trim because it can't toggle and doesn't know if it should be in closed loop, etc. Considering that fuel trims have a lot to do with the way a vehicle runs I'd address this O2 problem first, and then see if you still have the bogging down issue.

Since the starter runs, you're just missing the input to the ECM (Black/White wire). That signal starts at the the park/neutral switch, and also is the drive to the solenoid (but the solenoid part is working).

The ECM needs the STA signal to adjust injector timing (among other things) during start up, as all the other signals (air flow, O2) are erratic at that point. http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h25.pdf As you found out, you can still start the truck "by brute force" without the STA signal, but it will get even harder when the temperature drops (for instance).

Since you have only one missing signal, and you know where it starts/ends, this is just a multimeter job.

Good luck!

thanks alot for the responses guys and yes it is manual drive. The previous owner pulled off the 02 sensor and my muffler just fell off this past weekend and i had enough to only gather for muffler and pipe joints and extensions. the 02 is next on my list hopefully next week but as far as the starter ill look into it ASAP

What are all the things that could be wrong with code 43. My truck turns over but won't start.

"ALL" the things?
• Open or short in starter signal circuit • Open or short in IG SW or main relay circuit • ECM

That's assuming you have the code. As for the reasons it won't start, that's almost infinite, so you need to start with some diagnosis.

Thank you!!! That PDF really helped; not just with the code but with everything else. I'm pretty sure the solinoid is bad in my starter which is causing the code 43. Now I just gotta fix code 71...
