can they be used for new custom made rear bumper which will have tire carrier on it as well. Can they handle the weight or should the new bumper be mounted on the frame?

 

Are you building the new bumper if so you should be able to figure it out .If your buying one ask who made it about how to attach it.


Just how big of tire do you plan to hang off it?? just how heavy is this.

Your stock bumper mounts are attached to the frame or most are at least trucks this old who can say.

Are you planning to attach any anchor points to this bumper for recovery work?

If you want this easy to remove build some new brackets .

If you want it on so it has to be cut off by all means after all it is your truck.

So many different things can effect something like this if in doubt always go with stronger at least I do.

 

No, it will be a build one. The tire is 31 10.5 on stock spare wheel. The way I saw it is that bolts of stock mount are on the body. And yes, remove option is something I prefer.
I saw many DIY bumpers, very well done, but none of them used factory bumper mount. Either welded or they were put on the other way.
So naturaly I asked myself can stock mount handle new bumper which will be heavier that stock one with additional tire carrier and tire.

 

I am sure that if you were to just build a bumper that was roughly the same weight or even slightly heavier than the stock one, the factory mounts would be OK.

I would say that the stock mounts will fail if you move add a tire carrier to a bumper that is comparable in weight to the stock one or heavier. Just due to the extra leverage that you are putting above the mounts.

If you are building the bumper/carrier I would suggest either replicating the stock mounts onto thicker plate or build/buy some mounts like 4Crawlers (build to suit your needs - just an idea) I made ones similar to 4Crawlers so that I could build a tire gate and 2 gas can carriers.

Stock Gen 3 truck bumpers are stamped with a 300 lbs rating on them. This is the stock setup with stock mounts. If you want to use stock mounts then make sure your new bumper weight with tire is less than 300 lbs.

 

My truck had the stock bumper and a tow hitch. Ditched both, built a bumper and welded it on to 1/4" plate that bolted the the same location the hitch bolted to.

 

I see. I forgot to mention that it's 1st gen in question here. Mounts doesn't look so tough and bolts in the body are not so deep. I'm affraid that at some point they just dont crack or something...

 

i think you've answered your own question....make new mounts. don't forget to triangulate with more bracing for extra strength while you're making it.
