I have my fairly stock '92 extra cab and I need to mount my spare somewhere. I have some decent fab skills but don't want to get to crazy (have access to bender). I don't can't a bed cage, was thinking of a rack that would mount somewhere that could be removed. Anyone have something g they can show me for ideas? Thanks

When I finally get around to buying a full-size spare (I know I know), my plans are to make a very simple mount that keeps it vertical on the side of the bed. Mine will be slightly more elaborate since I'm also planning on putting angle iron across the top of the bed, with drilled/tapped holes for adding/removing tie-down/anchor points, a front and rear hoop for carrying ladders or lumber, mounts for hi-lift jack, shovel, spare tire, you name it.

Here is sort of what I was planning for the spare tire mount, but slightly different so the tire doesn't shift in vertical plane when out wheeling. Stupid simple design IMO and easily removable with only like 4 bolt holes. The thing I like best about this vs your typical in-bed tire mount (prerunner style) is that you don't lose much bed space at all, so it just makes more sense to me:

 

If you look towards the end of my build thread, you'll see my mount. I made it out of a couple of suspension arms off of a Ford Escort (had them lying around). Already had bushings, just mounted some angle iron in the bed, and used 3/4" pins. Whole thing is removable, and currently have a 35" spare on it. Can also be folded flat.

Also, look into Rotopax for a gas can. Real nice setup. Already have a road/trail, and will be getting a gas can soon.

I found the post, here it is to save time. I have since made a toolbox for the bwd that sits in front of the spare. The front legs were removed, and the spare is held to the box at an angle with two hitch pins.

From parts to final piece:

The legs are control and trailing arms from a Ford ZX2.


I used 4 pieces of 1" tubing and bolts to mount the plate away from the legs to clear the tire. I plan to have these pieces welded.






Mounts in the bed with 3/4" pins. Can remove the front pins to lay the tire flat.

Thanks! That looks good and good use of what ya got! I wanted some type of a stand up spare in the back of the bed. I've seen them strapped down back there but not sure how well that would stay. Also was thinking of making a receiver thing that held a spare but decided it was too heavy for my comfort back there. Maybe a tire gate is my answer?

 

I didn't go the tailgate route, because the truck is long enough, and departure angles are bad enough as is. I also only need so much bed space. I have a utility trailer if I ever need to haul anything.

 

I built a tailgate and made a detachable tire carrier.

I went with Rotopax because I love how they mount anywhere. They cost a lot of money, but I'm willing to spend it due to their mounting flexibility. I bought the Teraflex mounting plate that attaches to a HiLift jack and I have one 2 gallon water container and one 2 gallon gas container.

Yes, I know this is an ancient thread akin to the pyramids of Egypt. But dudes are still mounting gas cans. :-)
