I installed my 883's up front on my 98 4runner, now I've got some grew grease spatter coming from the boot closest to the engine on both sides. I can't see anything ripped from my point of view.

 

Sometimes they can be reclamped and you're good to go.....

If that doesn't do it- when my boots cracked a bit after lift and reclamp I replaced my cv shafts rather than the mess of rebooting them and considering the 210,000ish miles on the originals even though they were otherwise fine. Now I wish I'd just have put up with the mess and rebooted mine. Just my experience.

 

The boots will eventually tear after a lift. The choice of rebooting or replacing is up to you. Some people like replacing since it's easier over all and some don't want to give up their original OEM axles which are better quality.

 

Where could one get the boots from? Should I replace both boots on axles? Is this a difficult process?

 

Toyota dealers sell a kit with both boots for one side. Two kits are needed. It's messy, but not terribly difficult to do. You need a way to pinch the clamps closed.

 

Here's a write up I did a while back. Like RW said, not too hard just messy. Taking the axles out and putting them back is harder than changing the boots.

Well guys, the boots have officially tore. Where do you guys recommend getting the reboot kit from? My 4runner has 214k on it and I'd like to stick to OEM. Is there a better aftermarket? What are my best options?

 

The Toyota dealer has boot kits at about $44-50 per side (slightly less from an online Toyota part dealer). You'd need two kits each containing one outer and inner boot, the necessary grease, and the clamps. P/N 04438-35060 and the kit is shown in post 8 here.

I used this kit on my CVs and so far, so good after year or two.
