Camshaft thrust bearing oil clearance

Camshaft thrust bearing oil clearance
I just got my head back from the machine shop, and was looking at my fsm where it talks about measuring the camshaft thrust clearance. I have never done this before and am not quite sure what I am supposed to be measuring. The fsm just shows a feeler gauge inserted at the end of the cam. What exactly is being measured? If it is the distance between the camshaft and the bearing cap I have about a hundred times the .01 inch maximum allowance. Or is it the distance between where the cam comes into contact with the actual head portion (I guess I would call it the bearing seat). Thanks for any help, because if it is the first measurement, then according to the fsm the head needs to be replaced and I just wasted a ton of money having the shop resurface it and redo the valves... I hope not...
