Camshaft thrust bearing oil clearance

I just got my head back from the machine shop, and was looking at my fsm where it talks about measuring the camshaft thrust clearance. I have never done this before and am not quite sure what I am supposed to be measuring. The fsm just shows a feeler gauge inserted at the end of the cam. What exactly is being measured? If it is the distance between the camshaft and the bearing cap I have about a hundred times the .01 inch maximum allowance. Or is it the distance between where the cam comes into contact with the actual head portion (I guess I would call it the bearing seat). Thanks for any help, because if it is the first measurement, then according to the fsm the head needs to be replaced and I just wasted a ton of money having the shop resurface it and redo the valves... I hope not...

i believe thrust clearance is how much the cam can move fore and aft in the journals. can you push it back and forth? the amount of movement is the thrust measurement.

hope this helps

Thanks! If that is the case then I am good! There is little to no fore-aft play...
