87 4runner 22RE, 5 spd, Wacky Speedometer and buzzing dash

This is a new vehicle to me and I am wrangling with several issues. This one cropped up this morning after I drove it around all yesterday.

The dash makes a buzzing noise when I step on the accelerator and the speedometer needle bounces all of over the place +/- 10mph. I get buzzing and needle bouncing at constant speed as well.

I started searching the forums but mostly found failed speedometers.

Any suggestions?

It's either the speedometer or speedo cable.

I was going to crawl under it one I get it back from having the window replacement. I know the cable runs into the trans? I can check to see if it's all working there.

To get at the speedometer I need to remove most of the dash is that correct?

I have an 89 pickup and I have to remove a good chunk of my dash to get to the gauges so I assume it's similar for your Runner. Be on the lookout for little screws hidden in the shadows. And my speedo cable runs into the passenger side of the transfer case. Again, I assume it's the same for you as well. You can be pretty sure that part is working ok since your speedometer is doing anything at all. Your problem is going to be either the cable being dried out (which is most common) or a problem with the speedometer itself. You may end up having to replace both, which is what I had to do to get all the noise to finally go away.

@SPARKS89 Thank you! I'll have the 4Runner back in about an hour and will dive into this.
