Let's talk about straight piping
I have a 1987 Hilux, 2WD with a 22R engine. The exhaust pipe and muffler are in a sorry state so I was thinking of cutting out the catalytic converter and muffler and straight piping it. Have any of you guys doe this, and if so how and what were the results?

depends on pipe size ethier way its gonna be loud and more then likely illegal in ct. but the smaller pipe makes it pop more and sound more ricey where the bigger sounds deeper but kinda sounds like gargling. why not just put a glass pack on it to give it some tone?

there aint nothin wrong with straight piping, just make sure you got enough back pressure, but if you dont run large piping and run it all the way back that shouldnt be a problem. I run a 2.5'' straight pipe that comes out in front of the rear tire, but I got a 1 7/8'' reducer after the header

IMO straight pipes make these sound either too ricey or, like mine, sound like a tractor. I'm running a straight pipe to a thrush turbo muffler. Its cheap, sounds OK, and makes it bearable to drive without blowing your ear drums out.

I have ran a straight pipe on several of my vehicles and i have never been pulled over for it. If you dont drive obnoxiously around the police then you will be fine. My fav orite combo so far is on my taco, straight pipe to a flowmaster 40, all 2.5 inch pipe after the header.

If you run a 2.25" exhaust system with a straight through glass pack you will have maximum exhaust power, decent back pressure and no tickets. Anything over a 2.25" size is a waste of money unless your engine is putting out more than 300 HP. I run 2.5" because when I hit the "Juice" with my newly designed / installed Nitrous system, my engine is putting out about 375 HP.

You gain nothing by not running a muffler. In fact, you will lose torque on the bottom end from no back pressure. There is a reason EVERY performance engine builder says to run 2 inch to the muffler and 2 1/4 out: it works! The correct exhaust at a muffler shop only costs about $100. Why do anything else?

Slight bit more midrange power. Really stinky exhaust fumes. Worse gas mileage.

Just got my Yota and I'm pumped, it just has stock pipes and no Cat, stock muffler. I'm trying to get a little more sound but mainly, will putting a cat back on improve my idle/gas mileage/torque? Trying to do what I can before I dig into the valves. Mostly looking for efficiency outta this 3.0. Also if I do get one should my stock pipe fit around or inside the universal cat I'm planning on getting welded on. From what I've read the stock piping is 2 1/8. So should I get a 2" universal or 2.25?
